Throwing down the gauntlet to Anandtech

According to Anandtechs CPU cheatsheet on Athlon 64 here moving from 512KB cache to 1MB gets you about 5% speed increase. OK, I'll buy that. Moving from single channel memory to dual gets you almost 10%. Hmm, that one is a little hard to swallow. Doing both gets you better than 20%. WHAT!!

I think we need a review to back up these claims. Something like this.

3400+, 2.4GHz, 512KB, S754
3700+, 2.4GHz, 1MB, S754
3800+, 2.4GHz, 512KB, S939
FX-53, 2.4GHz, 1MB, S939

You could throw in a 3400+, 2.2GHz, 1MB, S754 just for fun. It would be nice to know if the extra 200MHz beats out the diff in cache size.

What I am presenting is by no means a definitive answer on which model is faster, but it should give a rough estimate.

Rough estimate or not the numbers should be based in reality. Let me give you an example. Moving from 512KB cache to 1MB cache on S754 gets you from .95 to 1.0. Moving from 512KB cache to 1MB cache on S939 gets from 1.04 to 1.15. So why does doubling the cache in one instance get you ~5% and in another ~10%? Sure you can say its 1 channel memory to 2, its apples to oranges, but having more cache on a single memory channel should be more important, not less. Pulling #'s out of thin air and then claiming "these are just rough #'s" doesn't cut it. Sorry.
