Hi, i sent my radeon 9700pro for a refund after i found out that ati isnt stable with my chipset.

Now i have the option of buying a ti 4600 from my friend for 75 bux, or buying a 5900SE for 200 off new egg.

If i get the ti4600 ill have 200 bux left wich i can save and buy a new monitor or mp3 player or wait till the next generation of cards are out.

My question is what should i buy? and will the 4600 be enough for say hl2?

I'd get the 5900, you'll be able to run AA\AF and Nvidia is still making drivers that directly address speed issues with the 5900, not to mention that the FX should be faster at stock and still have plenty of overclocking headroom. If you're planning on playing future games in all their glory, then I'd get the 5900.

That is quite a deal for a 4600, and it will run HL2 and DoomIII, but there's no guarantees on how fast it'll be. It depends on if you want the speed now or later. You'll almost definately be able to sell the 4600 for $50-75 in a couple months.

it'll play the games.. just slowly and not as its meant to be played. I'm gonna disagree with monkey on this one... why not save the money and go for the next gen cards? Sell the 4600 when u want a new one for about 50... youll have more than enough to cut the price of the card in half.. buy it, then you can run ANY game, and have it for future games... its nice to upgrade to the max. Do it all the way

by the way i heard that the next generation of cards will use the pci-express interface instead of agp.

what are your guesses/opinions on this and do you think maybe theyll make them for both platforms?

They will make next gen cards for AGP as well. Remember, the AGP 3.0 spec is fairly new.

but you gotta admit that the pci-x 16x seems tempting

twice the bandwith (4gb i believe) of agp 8x (2 gb i believe)

AGP 8X offers virtually NO benefits over 4X right now. Most cards have trouble filling up the pipe that 4X gives, let alnoe 8X. I have a feeling that Intel intro'd 8X as a tool to sell more motherboards for itself and its partners.

it doesnt matter, most video cards wont even saturate all of 4x bandwidth let alone 8x let alone 16x

If you get the 4600 you are gona be lightyears ahead of where u are now with the gf2. I still have my gf3ti500 which tears anything up i throw at it still! However I just purchased a 5900se evga. i was ready for a dx9card and 256 bit and pay a fair price for it. After looking at latest reviews I saw it as best option for me. So if you dont want or need a dx9 card yet or 256bit then get the gf4 and save up for the next generation. Call of duty is no longer being included with the 5900se as far as I know. That was another factor why I got it. Card in fact cost about 140 bucks since cod came with it.

If you plan on playing games and the speeds they should be played at then get the 5900. Im jumping ship from my 9600pro to a 5900 this weekend. I expect quite an upgrade

My .02 worth. Choose the Ti 4600 use til HL2 comes out. If you don't like how it plays HL2, sell it recoupnig most, if not all your investment and buy an upgrade. Basically you can play with the Ti 4600 for free. The price for the 5900 etc will be even lower in a few months when HL2 comes out.
