I'm planning to upgrade my video card from a TNT2 to a gf4 ti4200. The problem is, I currently have a dell machine (bought before I really cared much about comps) with a 200w PSU. Do you guys think that it can handle the ti4200? Otherwise I see no reasons why it wouldn't work. Thanks

200W is pretty weak. It depends on what other components you have in there, and how much everything uses up total. The processor, hard drives, other peripherals and cards in the PCI slots. You could try it and see. If you have problems you can always grab a decent 300watter.

You gotta figure 200 watts at 12 volts is a little over 16 amps.Thats a lot of current. On the other hand you also gotta figure that it's not 100% efficient, and that it won't run too well at 100% capacity, if at all. And a decent 300 watt supply isn't all that expensive. Up to you what you want to do.

Bottom line is it might work, but if ever you should exceed its capacity, or heat should stress it to the point of failing, you could end up losing precious data. Gotta figure ain't no UPS backup to fall back onwhen the power supply dies. OTOH if you're careful and lucky it could work. figure if you have 8 or less components all running at less than 2 amps each you're ok. But like I said before running at 100% capacity, or near it, is pushin your luck.

If I remember correctly Dell uses a standard ATX plug connector for their mobos. Unfortunetly the wiring to the connector is anything but standard. To upgrade the PS you'll need to get the wiring diagram from dell and then cut the ATX connector off the new mobo and re-splice according to Dell's specs. Check with Dell first you may be able to buy a PS from them instead saveing you all kinds of headaches.

It is possible it would work, depending on what the other components in your system are and how close the PSU performs compared to what the manufacturer is claiming. I don't think it would be a very good idea to try it. Companies that pre-build systems often use the weakest PSU they can. I would suggest at least a 250W, if not a 300W PSU.

128mb pc133 sdram (adding 256 more with the vid card)
shitty dell mobo
20gig 7200rpm ATA100 hd
TNT2 model 64 (32mb ram) AGP 4x
12x dvdrom (generic/dell)
generic/dell burner (pretty slow)
SB Live! value
nic card
unused modem
i dont think there are any case fans

Thanx for the help. Sounds like I might be able to pull it off but I'll call them to make sure before I order it tomorrow.
