So my gf and I went to buy a cup of starbuck the other day and she tipped the guy. For some reason, I sort of went off on her. Look, I'm not cheap. I always tip my fair share at restaurant even though again, I don't believe in it. However, now-a-day, you got to tip the barber, massage therapists, tour guide, etc....But it's cool, even though I don't like, I still tip all the above. But it's gotten to a point where I think is ridiculous. My gf didn't think tipping a starbuck employee was necessary but she felt "obligated" to do so and argue that it would be awkward not to....She had read some article about some so-called expert explaining tipping is appropriate to places that provides a "service.? Who decides who/when/where to tip? Is this some sort of hidden American cultural bullshit at work here? Much like how advertising subconsciously affects us and make us obligated to do things we normally wouldn't do? What next, should I feel obligated to tip the guy at McDonald because they're starting to serve McCafe now? I ask her why she felt obligated to tip a starbuck employee and not the McDonald employee..She couldn't answer..best thing she came up with was people don't tip at McDonald...No wonder for the first time in 70 years, American saving are in the negative. A penny saving is a penny earn folks...Sorry, I'm just frustrated we had to argue over this (and it's really not about the money but the way we see things) so I?m just off ranting..thanks for reading...

rofl.

Tip at places where ppl's wages are DEPENDED ON IT. waitors/waitresses make $2-3 an hour and entirely depend on tips.

Starbucks? rofl. They get paid $7/hr. They're fine.

Relax dude, have a bran muffin and relax. This isn't a issue to get that worked up about, save your energy for something worthwhile. That being said, I do agree with you about tipping the Starbucks guy, but if it makes her happy, I wouldn't worry much about it.

Fuck no, I don't tip those pseudo-baristas. I do, however, tip the on-campus Seattle's Best. They give me free drinks.

I can't say whether she was right or wrong until I see a pic of your gf first.

So she spent 5 bucks for a small cup of coffee instead of 4.

Since the guy picking up my trash is definitely a "service" I am going to staple a 5 on top of my trashcan tomorrow.

What about those 'full' service carwash places. Do you tip those guys that dry your cars or wash them on the inside?

On topic tho, I tip, I tip well, but only for those who are in that business, not chiptole, not starbucks.

Like I said, tipping those is fine. I don't believe in it but I still tip. If they provide a good service, i guess that's fine. However, tipping starbuck is not one of them....I guess it annoys me to see my gf gets brainwash by cultural influcences at times...

Dear Society,
Please eliminate tipping from your formal behavior code. It confuses people, and adds unnecessary complexity to paying for things. Plenty of jobs function perfectly well without the need for tips to "ensure" good service. Tipping places a person's wages at the mercy of the customer's whims, and as such, it is not a fair form of compensation.
If a customer desires to give a tip, that should be entirely their prerogative, not an expectation.

Signed,
Sane Society

PS - eliminating tipping as a societal expectation would drastically reduce the number of YATT's posted on ATOT, leaving more room for bulk beef threads.

I sometimes tip at the independent places. I'll buy something for $3 and tip $1.

what's an appropriate tip at Denny's for consistent mediocre service?

what about pizza hut. I once ordered a pizza online and went to pick it up myself. Paid with a cc and wrote $0 where it said tip amount. The dude picked up my receipt and double checked it before giving me a condescending stare.

I dont give a crap if their "wages are depended on it" or not. if the service is horrible they wont get shit from me.

and I also dont give a rat's ass if others want to throw their money around, but I care when they try to tell me how to use my own money.

The independents have lower prices to begin with. Add in a tip, and it is still cheaper.
