Starbucks? rofl. They get paid $7/hr. They're fine.

Actually most states do not have a service wage, just a minimum wage. So not only do they make $8/hr to bring you your food they also get a tip.

Whats worse is that a mjaority of it goes untaxed and then those pople who refuse to buy health insurance and stick the rest of us corporate slaves with the high tax bills.....

The independents have lower prices to begin with. Add in a tip, and it is still cheaper.

Yep, and my tip sometimes pays off. I'll sometimes get some free tea leaves, a free pastry, etc.

I tip at places like Starbucks, Subway etc, IF I am a regular customer there. Gets you better service.

People who buy coffee at Starbucks have more money than brains, so I imagine there's a lot of tipping there.

Yep. My LCS (Local Coffee Shop) hooks me up with free non-fat, Splenda, caramel lattes.

I used to tip at my Subway where my favorite guys/gals worked. If it was really busy and they still made small talk with me I considered it going that extra step and would occasionally get me extra cheese/meet/cookie for no extra charge

What coffee shops in Austin are good for just chilling at? Quiet, relaxing, comfy seating, etc. I haven't gotten a chance to explore around enough yet.

The subway near me won't even bag my sandwich for me. They ask you if you want a bag, then they hand you the sandwich with the empty bag laying on top of it.

Well, all those positions you mentioned are skilled and personal services...I usually tip for those too. Tipping a tour guide depends on a few things like the country, the tour and any perks to tipping (insider info/discounts at local merchants). I also tip bartenders, though many make more than minimum wage...IMO, it's good practice to keep the people handling your food and/or beverages happy.

But tipping for unskilled and impersonal positions, like the Starbucks "barista" person is going overboard.

If she wants to tip, that's fine...what irks me is that she feels obligated even though she doesn't want to...She feels awkward if she doesn't tip...this kind of mentality "worries" me

i've actually had people try to hand me a tip in the Dentist's office. i hand it right back. some services you just don't tip for.

i was tipping for your wonderful smile mosh, not the clean teeth. just take the money!

and starbucks ~does~ put a tip cup out, at least at the one by my house. i don't tip them, but it's not like people are forcing it upon them.

Every damn place you buy anything nowadays has a tip jar or asks you to donate money to some cause. I tip if its deserved. Usually not when I pick up food, but always at places I frequent.

My rule is that if I have to approach a counter and stand until I have what I bought, then no tip.

That includes Starbucks, local pizza joint, Subway, Panera, Quizno's, take out from a restaurant where I have to go in to get the food, etc.

For those of you tipping because you might get something for free...here's a hint. You really didn't get anything for free. In fact, you paid more for the item.

"Yeah I tip $1 everytime I get a sub at subway. Five times a week. Because on Friday they give me a free cookie." How's that $1 cookie you paid $5 for?

what, waitors? they do get paid $2-3 an hour. I was a waitor at a big chain (chili's) and I also managed waitresses at my parents' restaurant. I was paid MA state minimum FOR WAITING at Chili's ($2.54/hr, $7.50 is minimum wage for regular work) and my parents paid the waitresses $3 an hour.

That's not bad any means. My waitresses avged $20-25 an hour and I avged $18-20 an hour at Chili's with tip.

They make good money for blue collar work. This is all just 2-3 yrs ago.

Don't tip at Starbucks or any Fast Food joint. Only tip at sitdown/order Restaurants or Food Delivery persons.

I've heard that they get enough tips that the company rotates people through to spread the wealth. Plus, they're open in the winter, and I've gone on below-freezing days...

I agree with you here, because no waiter provided you with any service. No one exists to receive a tip in this scenario.

Doesn't Starbucks have a generic "Tip Jar"? Even that baffles me, but you certainly don't need to hand the individual cashier extra money. Imagine how much they would make if every customer in line paid extra for 1 minute increments of service. :Q

I'm on a layover at Charlotte airport and there is the valet guy in the bathroom handing out paper towels and has a huge jug of listerine and of course a tip jar. I didn't tip him, it's an airport restroom, not a 4-star restaurant.
