There's a pizza joint I go to on a regular basis. The owner is always nice to me and hooks me up every once in a while. I don't tip all the time, but the times I do I drop in a $5 for an order that comes out to $12. I have no problems doing that because he hooks me up with free drinks, slices, doubles the toppings on my pizza or what not and no extra cost. I go there about once or twice a week.


However, I would never tip at Starbucks because I am expected to. Hell, if I could pour my own tea, I'd gladly do it.

haha its not THAT bad, they get 6+ $ an hour.

I've heard BW3 pays a normal wage, but most places waitstaff gets paid $2.13 or something like that per hour.

Sometimes I'll put the change that I get back in the tip jar at Starbucks, or I might put a dollar in there if it's one of my friends who gives me free drinks. Other than that, no.

ive always considered myself a generous tipper, especially if the service merits it. but those guys in the bathrooms bother me to no end. dude ive gotten this far with rinsing off my hands and applying soap and washing my hands; i think im capable of also grabbing my own paper towel. also not to knock the profession because if its what works for you more power to ya but you're working in a bathroom! you think i want to wash up with a paper towel that you've touched while being in here the past couple of hours?! i think its getting to the point where im going to have to go mr. monk-status and just carry wipes with me.

Only time I ever tip at a Starbucks is if I'm paying cash and would rather not carry the 14 cents or whatever in change I get back. But I usually use the card.

As someone who works in a service industry job (albeit not one relying on tips), my view is that you tip for those who are dependent on them for their job. Waiters, Delivery drivers and such who get paid a minimum-wage or sub-minimum-wage job rely on tips as part of their income. Starbucks people serving you coffee just behind the counter don't deserve tips as a rule, but if you're having a sudden generous impulse to tip, no one's stopping you. But your gf's logic was admittedly skewed.

I dont give a crap if their "wages are depended on it" or not. if the service is horrible they wont get shit from me.

The person bringing you the service is rarely the one who messed up (if we're talking about waiters and delivery drivers). If they were at fault, I can understand. But if you're being extremely obnoxious, you had better not order from them again. I can assure you that if the person's memory is half-decent, they will remember people who don't tip. People talk, and word gets around. While people do mess with your food if you're overly obnoxious, that's very rare in my experience....but they tend to keep mental lists.

Actually most states do not have a service wage, just a minimum wage. So not only do they make $8/hr to bring you your food they also get a tip.

Depends on the job. Iirc some waiters make far below the minimum wage and rely on tips to bring their wages above minimum wage. If they don't make enough, then the employer has to make up the difference.

Tipping at a Starbucks that you frequent on a constant basis can be a good thing. The entire lot of baristas know me and I know most of them by name. They know what I drink and my drink is already made for me by the time I reach the front of the line. But more importantly, I get comped free drinks and the occasional pastry a few times a week. Do I leave a fat tip on those days? Hell Yes. The tip will be triple what I normally leave, but a third of what the drink would have cost me otherwise.

Would I tip at a Starbucks that I'll never visit again or one that I just visit once/twice a week? No way.

You are blowing this whole thing way out of proportion. Forget the subject of tipping. Going off on your GF about it is stupid. You need to learn to choose your battles more wisely.

Also, I don't always tip at Starbucks or any other place where the wages of those serving me do not depend on tips. I do on occasion though. I don't feel obligated. If she felt obligated then that is her own fault. It's not an American thing for sure. The proof is the amount of money in those tip jars which is usually slim to none.

I remember working at Vons, I got 7.50/Hr and I was a courtesy clerk...a bagboy. Anyway, if moms needed help with carryout because of their skawkers, I'd help them. And old people too. And some of them would tip me. For the record, you're supposed to give tips to the "management" and they put "them away in the box." So, I said fuck that, and kept the tips for myself.


I remember some guy gave me a 10 dollar trip for helping him find his tomato sauce. :Q

F tipping people for doing their job, sometimes it fills like bums are taking over. Only tip my barber and waiter/waitress. You know at some point you are going to see a tip jars next to the credit card slot on the gas pump as you are pumping gas.

I tip at starbucks. I don't think you have too or are obligated too but if they are doing a good job, why not. If you can afford to buy a 4 buck coffee drink, you can certainly afford to throw in a buck.

I frequent a starbucks and a coffee bean near my work. They both get frequent and regular tips from me, and it has probably been one of the best investments I've made. That two bucks every time I get a drink has ensured my drink gets made first, that it is made correctly, and has given me perks that just make me happy in general. I certainly feel no obligation to keep tipping and I feel no entitlement to these benefits, but I like that they are there.

The staff at both have made it clear that if I don't like my drink, bring it back. That's if they made it poorly or if I decide you know what? I'm not really in the mood for this and I ordered wrong and want something else.

They hand me drinks that they think I might like (and more often than not are right about), they hand me free pastries and cookies, they give me free size upgrades (tall coffee turning into a venti is a pretty neat deal).

I've tipped the barber from day one of my life. Well, not literally, but ever since I can remember my dad would always give me the money to pay and always include a few bucks extra. Then again this was before corporate takeover of the industry. This was just your old-school around the corner neighborhood barber shop. At first I always thought it was so that I could get a piece of gum from the barber, then later on I realized and continued the practice, though I feel less obliged than I used to since I don't have a barber who knows my name and background and can carry on a conversation anymore.

I'll tip when I feel it's appropriate elsewhere. I'll never let an effing magazine article tell me when it's appropriate though.
