Tips on purchasing a PS3?

Im planning to purchase a PS3 (for MGS4 of course) and I was wondering if purchasing one is similar to purchasing an Xbox360. Im referring to the way you can check the lot number of the Xbox360 (on the outside of the box) to get a certain revision that is less RROD prone. Is the PS3 similar in the sense that certain hardware revisions are superior/gimped?

The PS3s are not really having the same problems that the Xbox 360 is having, so in terms of reliability there are all pretty reliable. However, as you get newer and newer, some models of the PS3 don't have the same capabilities as the older ones (ie Backwards compatibility). So if you don't need the backwards compatibility then you're good. Also, side note, there will be a MGS4 PS3 model when it is released so if you are interested in that you could get that as well.

Is it cheaper to buy one with the gift card, or over ebay? Where would I stand to save more? One has shipping but the other has tax...

Wait for the walmart deal this weekend and you will be ahead of either.

Buy a PS3 at Walmart between June 1 and June 7 and receive a $100 blu-ray gift card.

Not sure if you can only purchase blu-ray and games with it. Or anything in the store.

yeah that's what I meant, would $100 off of a $459.99 system (with game) plus tax be cheaper than buying over ebay with game?

I don't mind the giftcard since walmart gets a shitload of my money anyway. But I wouldn't want to have to buy crappy bluray movies with it. I don't believe in buying movies only renting.

You probably have to buy movies seeing as it's a 'blue ray' card. I mean, that's a HUGE deal and I doubt walmart would do something so nice. If anything, $100 blueray giftcard = $20 REAL giftcard.

The 40gb models have a few less features than the 80gb. They're going to re-release the 80gb with a copy of Metal Gear Solid 4 and the new dual-shock controller, but it'll retail for $600. The 40gb is $400 and comes with a copy of Spider-man 3 (the blu-ray movie, not the game).

I think the retail will be $500, if I'm not mistaken. Regardless, what will the differences be between the current PS3 controller and the "new dual-shock controller"?

(buying a new system in the next week or two and trying to get all the info I can)

The dual-shock controller is the same as the current six axis controller, except it will now also have rumble functionality like the PS2 and PS1 dual-shock controllers.

Is the six-axis still there? Or did they remove it? If its still there then why the hell did sony not put rumble in its controllers initially?

because they got into a lawsuit and didn't want to pay for it. And said "you don't need rumble." And of course, months later.. they settle, and "oh.. umm.. we're going to get rumble, yay!"

You're better off just using the Gold Box trick on Amazon than buying one on Ebay. Brand new, receipt, free shipping for $379.99.

And the Walmart GC won't be applied to the purchase of the PS3, so with tax you're going to be paying about $425 out of pocket for just the system. You'll just get a $100 GC to use on later purchases, so for example you could go back and get GTA4 and a Dualshock3 for about $15 instead of $115.

So in the end you'd be saving about $45-50 by buying the PS3, game, and controller at Walmart instead of Amazon, depending on your taxes of course, and whether or not the GC is limited to only BluRay purchases or not.

Did I just answer a question that nobody asked? Awesome.

Keep in mind the $500 MGS bundle -includes the game- so that and the Dual Shock 3 with rumble mostly erases the price difference between the 40 GB and the 80 GB. So if you care at all about PS2 backwards compatibility you might want to get the MGS bundle instead.

That $100 gift card at Walmart is a great deal though, as long as you can spend it on games. I  watching blu-ray movies but prefer to rent 99% of them from netflix instead of buying them.

Can you sign up for a Sony/Chase visa at sonystyle.com? That's another way to get $100 off of either PS3 model.

I agree that you should get the 80gb if you want backwards compatibility, but you're still paying $50 extra plus or minus however much you consider rumble to be worth. If you buy a 40gb + MGS + dual shock controller, it might be the same total price, but you'll have 2 controllers instead of one.
