I just wanted to say, Thank You. I had to have another transfusion on Saturday and this might be an ongoing process for the rest of my life (depends on how things play out). It's because of your selfless act that I have a shot at leading a somewhat "normal" life.

From the bottom of my heart....thank you.

Edit:

For those not wanting to read the whole thread I figured I'd ask this here instead af adding another post (if anyone is still reading this thread) . Would anyone know how much blood is in each unit? I know they told me but I can't remember.

I've never been able to give blood either so don't feel bad. I just never pictured myself as having to be on the receiving end.

O is the universal donor, AB is the universal receiver. While it is better to receive blood of the same type (A if you're A), O will always work. The majority of the US population is type O.

I don't know what my blood type is, but the first time I tried to give blood will be my last. Apparently I'm too small, because my immune system went crazy when it noticed that a lot of blood was missing... it seriously started clotting in the blood bag, lol... and that's with anti-clotting agents inside the bag :Q

Edit: Typo on "bad", should be "bag" heh.

Yeah, the thought had crossed my mind as to what kind of person the blood came from, but I figure that as long as it makes me better than I'm fine with that.

It wasn't exactly my choice to get the transfusion but I guess when it comes down to it I'll take blood from even the craziest of AT'ers if it means I can live a better life (remind me about this post if I ever go insane after a transfusion...lol).

I thought I remembered hearing that O was the universal blood type but I wasn't certain. Guess now I know

Blood type percentages based on population:

O+ 39%
A+ 34%
B+ 8.5%
O- 7%
A- 6%
AB+ 3.5%
B- 1.5%
AB- 0.5%

Only type O- are uinversal donors (i.e. anybody can receive it), while type O+ can be received by people with + Rh factors (O+, A+, AB+, B+).

Personally I am O-, being a universal donor blood type I always get letters in mail or phone call when my 2 months are up....last I checked I am over 30 donations.

If memory serves me right....type AB tends to be used for speciality things like plasma and/or platelet transfusions.
