I'm AB+, a universal recipient. I used to donate all the time, but when I found out I was diabetic, I cannot donate anymore.

Sorry to hear about that...my grandmother was diabetic and I know it wasn't easy for her. Since you're a universal recipient at least you know you're covered should the need ever arise (not that I'm hoping you ever need blood but you know...a silver lining in every cloud and such)

I tried, but they said my vein was too small. I think that was the tactful way of saying I had too much fatty tissue in the way.

When people give blood, do the organizations who collect it sell it or donate it to hospitals? Do the hospitals charge for it? It seems like if anyone makes money off of it, they should pay the donors.

In this area at least, there is a cost to receive blood... however, if you're a donor, there is no cost to you.
The cost offsets the Red Cross's costs for the bloodmobiles.

I just started giving blood back in August, couldn't get a full unit out of me the first time. But I just donated again last week and they got a full unit out of me .

I'll be donating blood every two months from now on.... although I do not appreciate the bruise that I get from the needle .

That's great that you donate so often. With all that's wrong in this world it's nice to see that so many people take time out of their busy schedules to donate blood. Even though our blood types are different I'm sure someone out there appreciates what you've done. So, on their behalf....thank you.

Heh...you should see what my arms look like any time I've needed extensive blood work (or I've been in the hospital)....I look like some crack junkie with all the bruises. When I got my blood drawn this last time I went to the doctor it left a big fat bruise as a reminder....in fact, it still hasn't gone away.

I give as often as I can (o+), but the last few blood drives have come at a time when I wasn't feeling well. I work in a hospital, and we have blood drives 3 or 4 times a year. They usually set up across the hall from my office, so that makes it real easy for me to donate.

Finally gave blood about 2 months ago at a bloodmobile. Got tired of saying I should do it and actually did.

Interestingly enough, when the blood center sent me the card giving the blood type and cholesterol count the card read blood type of A+. I've always been A-.

Called them and said "I've always been A-". The lady asked me if the military told me that and I said yes and she told me it happens all the time. Couldn't understand whether she meant military is bad at typing blood or used to be bad. She said definitely A+ and apparently A+ can take A- so it didn't matter anyway.

As for original poster, I don't know what your condition is, but I sure hope things work out for you.

I'm afraid that I'm off the charts for giving blood. Been overseas to nasty places, have been loaded up with all kinds of crazy shots including the anthrax series, plus I keep getting tattoos. They dont want my juiced up blood.

I can't give blood. I was in Europe about 15 years ago for longer than six months total, so I'm blacklisted as at risk for the human mad cow disease equivalent (how ironic).

I'm O-Negative, too.

Yeah the first time I donated blood, half of my right forearm (they took blood from my right arm) was dark purple for 2.5 weeks. I was scared that it'd be a permanment condition, thank god it faded away completed about 4 weeks later.

Maybe since A- and A+ are compatible the military doesn't take much time to differentate between the 2?

As for my condition, I posted it in this thread. It hasn't been easy but I survive. It looks like things are gonna get more complicated as the years pass but I'll manage. Heck, I've made it this far so that's got to count for something.

From the bottom of my heart....thank you.

Edit:

For those not wanting to read the whole thread I figured I'd ask this here instead af adding another post (if anyone is still reading this thread) . Would anyone know how much blood is in each unit? I know they told me but I can't remember.

Dude, i do it for the free cookies and juice....
But enjoy and your welcome
