To upgrade or to keep?

I need some help from you guys. I am going to be ordering a new case and 64bit vista premium this weekend but having second thoughts on upgrades to my whole entire system as parts will be outdated soon anyway the minute i buy new stuff.

My system right now. Everything stock, i dont OC, other than the video card maybe.

ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe Motherboard
AMD (x2 6000+ AM2) Windsor 3.0Hz
EVGA (640-P2-N825-AR) GeForce 8800GTS 640MB
G.SKILL Memory 4GB (240-Pin DDR2 800)
Seagate Baracuda 500 GB
Thermaltake 750W ToughPower Power Supply

Running a 22" Acer Monitor. I am tired of wasting my memory with 32bit vista, so going with 64 now.


What do you suggest i do? should i upgrade everything or wait for w/e time until prices go down even more, are they going down anytime soon anyway on everything???

Also I was thinking of getting 4 more gigs of ram for 64 bit vista, will that be a waste or 4 i have is enough? i dont want to waste my money on ddr2 800 as 1066 and beyond is out now which i assume is much much faster but costs a pretty penny.

What should i do guys?

Well, why are you upgrading? Most people upgrade because of a performance target they need to meet, like they've bought a new monitor and want to play games on it, or their current system isn't cutting it when they want to transcode video or whatever. What is it your system can't do at the moment? It looks pretty mid-high end to me.

If you are going to buy a new system be sure to read the sticky in this forum but I can't really see why you'd even need to upgrade. Maybe slap a newer and better graphics card in that, such as a Radeon HD4870 and you'll get another good while out of it.

You don't need to upgrade.
You don't need another 4GB of DDR2.

Unless you're pulling some sort of exotic OC, DDR2 800 is plenty.
Think of memory speed as tire speed ratings...
Your old reliable Geo Metro won't run 200mph even if you have tires rated to run 200mph. :laugh:

well i have this "syndrome" if you can call it that, i always try to get the most of my curents parts as in sell them and get as much as i can before they hit rock bottom. if i wait and keep using everything i wont be able to sell it and it will just lay in my closet.

well i am upgrading to 64bit vista, so having the extra kick wouldnt hurt. or the 4gb ram i have is more than enough?

i dont know, i have some extra money so i wouldnt mnd upgrading to play crysis on a little higer quality and other new games coming out. i know my video is not so good now, i dont know why i went with it a while ago, should have stuck with ATI, no more nvidia for me.

my plan was.

sell the 8800 and get 4870
sell the ram and get 8gb's as 2x2x2x2
sell 6000+ and get 9950 phenom

and run it all on my current mobo...

but not sure if i should with prices being cut and etc. and i feel like i am being stuck in the past with the pc800 ram instead of 1066+ etc.

You have too much money to burn.
Invest in a good mutual fund. It will perform much better than any hardware you're considering.

You might also consider investing in a "reading comprehension" class.

If spending money will comfort you... Buy a new Cray! :thumbsup::laugh:

yeah i know. but i really dont have much money to burn if i sold all my current parts i wouldnt pay too much for everything new

but thats why i am sking all this, as i didnt WANT to do it, i need opinions from others

main reason is 64bit vista. will the 4gb i have be enough to handle everything including games and such?

i guess the only real upgrade i should so is sell the video card and buy a 4870

2x2x2x2 = 16

DDR2-1066 won't give you any performance boost over DDR2-800, especially not if your processor is just going to downclock it. Just because something new comes out with bigger numbers doesn't necessarily mean that it'd benefit you.

4GB is more than enough.

Get the 4870.
