Jostling a trapped animal in a cage is a lot different than dropping in cat food with pills in it. Give up Nik.
"I've got these pills that I've mixed in with cat food. However, for lack of better delivery system, I'm going to fling a handful of it at the cage, hoping some lands in the cage and he eats it and dies. Here goes nothing"
Ok, so that's how you would do it. I'd try just gently dropping it in. I think the OP would probably side with me as well.
 That suggests that you're close enough to the cage to get sprayed.
Brilliant. Skunks spray to defend themselves. If you've ever seen a skunk in person it won't spray unless you statle it. Approaching cautiously and putting food in the cage would not scare it at all.
Skunks don't wait until you're on top of them to spray.
