Nah, the cruelty part is where he drugged it AFTER he already had it trapped. Trap it, take it off the property, and release it like the law says you're supposed to in California. Not trap it, drug it, release it next to the pool, let it drown, etc.

The California Fish and Game Code classifies skunks as nongame mammals. Nongame mammals that are injuring or threatening property may be taken by the owner or tenant of the premises at any time and in any legal manner.

That the skunk died is just a logical consequence of those stupid actions - and therefore irresponsible and cruel.

I do NOT know what AC would've done - MAUBE they would have killed it, maybe not. Anyway its important to point out that it's not ok that people can do stuff to their likings to animals as they wish.

The absolute right thing woud've been him calling AC...and not come up with some weird ideas like drugging him and releasing him afterwards - and, even better, (obviously) openly ask in public how to kill it ? (Whatever actually the reason was that this skunk had to die..if its TRUE that he asked around here. Why ? Because it was on his property ??? Because he doesnt like skunks ? I must have lived on a farm too long. We shoot skunks. They carry rabies and are considered pests. People who stick their nose in our business, punch em in the nose. Either way you get rid of a pest.

Nik, I've read the majority of your posts.. which is saying a lot, and I still have to agree with the OP. it's definately more humane than how animals are dealt with here. if animal control was just going to do the same thing in a 100% lethal dose (as they know how much that is (again OP isnt a vet so didnt know), and charge him 50 bucks..) I say it's definately more humane to drug it than to put a bullet to the skull and bam thats all she freakin wrote.

for the morality of the issue (as everyone has a side on this).. he *could* have called animal control, but at the same time (I havent read the thread which got him in this mess) I dont remember seeing anyone say call animal control on the first page. perhaps those who are upset now probably should have posted your complaints back when they mattered. now this guy's under big brothers eye for getting rid of a nuisance? remind me to buy him a beer.

Here's my 2 cents because I think a lot of ppl are missing the point when they continue to argue over things like PETA & the imminent threat of rabies...


No one really personally gives a dump about the skunk. The real story lies in that fact that this guy went through all that trouble over this skunk. The cage, cat food, multiple sleeping pills and finally the pool. Then posting it on AT to seek attention from it. And still another post after he gets reported for it.

You fill in the blanks if I left anything out.

Skunk = Order- Carnivora, Suborder - Caniformia, Family - Mephitidae

Thus it is much more closely related to dogs than rats or mice.
