A shovel is considered a humane way to kill an animal. Quick any easy. And the point was why didn?t he finish the job. The answer he was bored with it and went to find something else to play with.
He stated he thought it was dead, so I imagine he also thought he finished the job. Saying as several hours (presumeably) later it was gone, he was wrong, as he said himself in a follow up post.
Okay so you are saying he drugged it and he thought it died so he was leaving it there for hours hoping it would dispose of itself. Who would leave a dead animal lying on their back porch that is just asking for trouble?
this reminds me of Jack Nicholson in A few good men:

My answer is I don't have the

I'm an educated man, but I'm afraid I
can't speak intelligently about the travel
habits of William Santiago. What I do
know is that he was set to leave the base
at 0600. Now are these really the
questions I was called here to answer?
Phone calls and footlockers? Please tell
me you've got something more, Lieutenant.
Please tell me there's an ace up your
sleeve. These two marines are on trial
for their lives. Please tell me their
lawyer hasn't pinned their hopes to a
phone bill.

Do you have any other questions for me,
counselor?
