Well.. they were correct in regards that I haven't watched a movie with Tom Cruise in it because I thought he was a weirdo.

How sad. I wonder when all the scientology nuts go on a field trip and jump in some volcano.

Doesn't really matter for Cruise. Moviegoers can separate the wacko off-screen from the talent on-screen. Collateral is one of my favorite movies of all time.

As far as star power is concerned, just look at the worldwide gross for War Of The Worlds. Tom and Steven took that one straight to the bank.

I was thinking about the same thing....

Tom Cruise and business partner Paula Wagner may not have been able to renew their contract of $17 Million/year with Paramount (Paramount wanting a $2M/year new deal)
but Tom hauled in $87M just for Warof the Worlds from Paramount (a record for a single movie actor).

He got 87 mil for that hunk of dog poopy? Worst remake of a classic tale ever. Spielberg totally succeeded in making each of the main characters annoying to the point that you wanted them to be disintegrated by an alien death ray.

He's started to turn a lot of people off to him and the studio knows it. His last major film (MI:III) fell well short of expectations. The studio decided not to take any further chances, like him wierding out on national TV during the promotion of a $200M+ film.

Not to mention the groups of idiots in the movie that stood there gawking at the giant robots until they fianlly started killing people...

We rented it from netflix, and my wife was saying "Run away already! Damn, people!" for half the movie.

IMHO, my guess is this has less to do with how Paramount feels and more to do with Paramount not being able to lock in other entertainment staff who are willing to work with Cruise anymore. Just because Speilberg did War of the Worlds with him a year or so ago doesnt mean he is willing to work with him again. IIRC, Cruise was putting off plenty of actors by forcing them to listen to hours of his Scientology BS before he would consider them for roles in his films. If that is true, it is begging for a lawsuit and I wouldnt want to be the movie studio who is legally tied to him when/if it ever becomes an issue.

My point is that Cruise/Wagner parting with Paramount is a double edged sword.

Sure, Paramount is setting its foot down....Actors should not get that much pay.

But this may bite the studio down the road now that (IF) Cruise/Wagner may be able to bring half a dozen projects to another studio and bring to that studio BILLIONS of dollars, as what they have brought to Paramount for the past 10 years in revenue, we'll be wondering then who really got PWNED.

Exactly. Has he ever been in a true flop? Has he ever even been in a big budget movie that hasn't grossed 9 figures? Everything he touches turns to gold.

Please. Do you really expect most of the public to act any different?

I don't think studios have much of a choice when it concerns A-list or franchise actors like Cruise. I actually think its a great idea for directors and actors to forfeit a guaranteed salary in exchange for a percentage of the gross; it makes them more invested in the project. Take James Cameron; he forfeited part of his salary because Titanic was over budget, in exchange for a percentage of the backend payout, and he ended up cashing out at roughly $115,000,000 for his work. Mel bankrolled The Passion because studios weren't ready for the risk; his percentage of the backend for that movie is somewhere around $300,000,000.

wow... i don't like tom cruise or anything, but that's not fair whatsoever. his behavior hasn't been too off kilter within the past year. yeah, he's been put on the spotlight for saying some things that weren't exactly accepted by the social norm, but that doesn't mean he's been exhibiting unusual behavior or anything.

i bet this all has to do with his belief in scientology rather than something normal. paramount's ceo probably doesn't want to be associated with a "religion" like scientology and since everyone equates cruise with scientology, he got canned. i REALLY don't buy the whole behavior thing.
