When the chief told Derek he was a good and decent man, I thought to myself, "whatever you need to believe to do the surgery, I guess..."
The problem with this show is that the more they develop the characters, the more they act like they are in high school.
why isn't he a good and decent man?
the guy can't help who he loves and doesn't love... that's not something you can just control. yeah, i'm not saying that it sucks for whomever is on the receiving end of the heartbreak, but that's life. something else that's life is finding someone who's right for you and finding the person for whom you're right. something that you SHOULDN'T do is live a lie... life's too short to live a lie and to not be happy.
shepherd is a good and decent man... just because he can no longer commit to his wife emotionally has nothing to do with his goodness or decency. also, don't forget that addison cheated on him... with his best friend. she didn't even do it out of love... she did it for derek's attention.
also, you need to remember that derek ended up choosing addison over meredith... he tried to make the marriage work. he worked at it as hard as he could. he wanted to do what was right. he just didn't have it in his heart anymore, though...
life isn't as simple as that, people. to cast stones at those who've got struggles in their lives or do things that they can't help is not right.
also, as for character development tending towards high schoolers, isn't that the natural way of life? there will always be some element of high schoolish drama wherever a story takes place because that's what happens when you're around the same group of people constantly... it's not like undergrad where you switch things up all the time and you're not around the same people day in and day out. think about where you work... you don't have gossip mills or interoffice relations where you work? you don't think rumors go around or that people talk trash about others behind their backs?
