You need a DeciBel meter. Radio Shack used to carry some, they probably still do. I'm sure you can get something decent online as well. Google may be your friend here.

try C/net downloads sound measurement-they have free programs that use your sound card and cand do lab type meaurements even spectrem analyzer,waterfall data logging pretty nifty stuff
