How does that compare with the loss that M$ and Sony take for their consoles? Any figures on those?

Wikipedia says the first release of the PS3 had an estimated loss of $250.

And a recent article posted by Queasy said Sony is losing $50 on each PS3 still. After about a year I think Microsoft was estimated to be selling Xbox 360s for more than it cost to build them, but they've dropped the price since then and they also have the warranty debacle.

Through the magic of accounting, the warranty debacle was charged to MS's 2007 budget. So, 2008 and on they are clear from it in terms of profit and loss. MS was making almost $80 per Elite sold prior to Jasper coming out according to iSuppli. With the Jasper die-shrink and parts reduction along with the price reduction, I would imagine they are right around the break even mark.

Nintendo don't sell their consoles at a loss.

They were making a profit on every single Gamecube console sold even at the $250 launch price. They're doing the same with the Wii.
The last console they sold at a loss was probably the N64.

Nintendo has long abandoned the "selling consoles at a loss to make up with software/licensing sales" strategy.

It's part of the reason why I own their stock and not Sony or Microsoft.

How many of each have been sold this year? The Wii and DS are clearly number one and number two. While the 360 had a better holiday season because of their price cuts, the PS3 was outselling the 360 the first half of the year. The yearly total for the 360 and PS3 would probably be close.

Worldwide, the 360 ended up with almost a 1million sales lead over the PS3 for 2008 alone. The difference is that the Wii and 360 sales were up over last holiday while the PS3 sales were down.

"Analysts" are predicting a price drop for the PS3 after the new fiscal year in April.

Just bought a PS3 primarily as a Blu-Ray player for our new 50" panny plasma. Only have Prince of Persia for it so far, but I'm already happy I bought it simply for the Blu-Ray. Almost got a 360, but I realized there are more games on 360 that eventually get ported to PC that I want, than PS3. That plus the Blu-Ray capabilities finally sold me.

Blu-ray players are just hitting sub-$200 levels now. A quick check of fatwallet shows some have been for $150. You're now able to get a 360 Arcade + HD for $230 + a standalone Blu-ray player for less than a PS3. Crazy recession.

No way Nintendo makes $6 per wii sold, methinks someone misplaced their decimal point.. $60 is much more likely.

plus $10-15 per nunchuck and controller..

You guys are going to think I'm crazy but I have still NEVER seen a Wii on a store shelf. Granted I don't go looking for them at the supposed 'right' times nor am I looking for them to purchase. It's just that any time I'm in a store that sells them I like to take a look and see what the Wii stock level is like. Never seen anything like it.

I've seen them quite a few times and never bought one. Every single time, I peek over at the games available and see pretty much nothing that I'd play. I'd probably play Mario Kart, but not much more than that.

One thing is, it's not worthwhile for me to "invest" in another console when I get the majority of games on one. Most of my friends have an XBOX 360 (as well as quite a few family members) and I've purchased all of my games that come with extra peripherals for the 360 (Rock Band, Guitar Hero, DDR), so purchasing for a new system means I need to buy more stuff.

So, I'll stick with my 360 and my PS3.

Oh and there's one interesting thing that happened to me. I purchased my PS3 awhile back with the Chase Sony card and I posted on here once talking about all the issues I had using the card (even with a $0 balance and no payment listed for a month or two, it reported that my card was "past due"). Chase closed my account on me and deleted my 8,000 points (~$80). I'm still pretty pissed at them and called them up about it when I found out. I got the typical "We cannot do anything about it." spiel from Chase . I was going to buy a remote and another controller with that!

I saw some late summer/early fall, but since November I haven't seen one (or Wii Fit)
