Hey all,

I inherited this laptop. Its is great shape. It has a 1.5 GHz Celeron M processor, 400 MHz front-side bus, 1 MB L2 cache. I would like to know my options for upgrading the processor if possible. Will it take a Pentium M processor??? Would like to get the best bang for the buck. I plan on adding at least 1GB more memory, and 2 GB if I can update the Celeron.

Thanks in advance.

It might be able to take a Pentium M, but who knows? I think the fastest P-M was 2.2GHz, but that is according to Wikipedia, and I have never actually heard of one of them being used in industry. As it stands, the Celeron M is not significantly worse than the Pentium M in terms of performance, it really only lacks power saving features.

Your laptop has the Intel 910GML chipset; max FSB speed is 400MHz. The fastest compatible Pentium M processor is the Pentium M 765 (2.1GHz). It's compatible with any Pentium M Socket 479 processor with a default bus speed of 400MHz. If you try installing a Pentium M with a default bus speed of 533MHz, it will run underclocked.

Unfortunately, the 910GML chipset is not compatible with any newer mobile processors (e.g. Core, Core Duo, Core 2 Duo), but you might already have known that.

As TheStu pointed out, you will notice a slight speed increase with a faster Pentium M; but you will also get a decent improvement in battery life because the Pentium M has power-saving SpeedStep which the Celeron M does not.

Thanks for your replies TheStu & jpeyton,
Going in search of the Pentium M 2.1. It would have been nice to be able to upgrade to one of the newer mobiles. But I had my doubts, still it should feel snappier than the 1.5 Celeron and the "Speed Step" isn't going to hurt either. The kids will mostly be using it for school, email, and music. So it should do the trick, even without messing with it. But I've never had a laptop apart so why not if the price is right. And if it'll handle my exactimate estimating software I maybe able to hold of purchacing a new one till this summer.

Thanks again

WOW hard to find item, lots of 478 pin stuff on flebay, probably a dumb question. But will a 478pin Pentium M processor work??? Searching now but haven't found out yet. From what I've found though. Intel just named it a Pentium M 479 because there was already the P4 478 and they both have 478 pins.

Save up for a cheap $399 laptop with a Core 2 and Vista Premium or Basic. You'll be far happier.

Good advice, after searching around for a while I kind of came to that conclusion. The kids can use it as is till I can find one of those deals.
I have to get one for work/personal and am struggling with what to get, been watching for a smokin Dell deal on a 17" core 2 that I can get with XP Home or Pro. Other thing is I'd like to have an 8600M GeForce.

Thanks

Work software requires XP BTW
