A few months ago I was walking through a Staples-Business Expo retail store and noticed the toshiba proteges. I really liked how small the machines were and how much power they packed. One very downside is the price of them. They seemed to all be over $2,000 for a measly 1Ghz. Anyone own/used one of these? Also, any suggestions on what places sell them cheap?

I own a Portege 2000, if your only intent is to do web browsing, email and instant messaging, it'll work fine. Loading up anything else like Office applications take some time. Graphics programs like Photoshop or InDesign, you can pretty much forget about....

I've been eyeing the r100. If you want something cheap and very portable for basic tasks, check out the sharp actius mm20. I've been trying to decide between the toshiba r100 (off ebay), dell x300/300m (off ebay, used), and mm20. It's a tough decision.

Porteges are traditionally great machines - I just got rid of my 7220cte in favor of a smaller Dell Latitude L400, and the build quality of the portege is top notch in every way. I can only assume the newer porteges continue the tradition.

Well actually I don't feel the same way. I haven't used the larger Porteges, but of the two I've used, an EXTREMELY old 3040CT and a somewhat newer Portege 2000, I felt that the quality and designed has declined a lot. There was no reason, a 300mhz 3040CT with 96mb of ram should feel faster than a 750mhz 2000 with 256mb of ram. In addition, in terms of design, I broke a plastic piece off the 2000 during my first week of use, the piece around the security lock should have never been made of plastic in the first place. On the 3040CT it was made out of metal.

If you are looking for a small laptop, but still functional have you checked out the IBM Thinkpad X series? Or look into the Fujitsu Lifebooks...

I have a portege 3440CT and I love it, it's got a P3 500 and 192mb ram. It's from 2000 and still running strong. It's very light, so I can take it to group meetings or labs and it won't get in the way at all. 4lbs is nothing compared to some of the books I have.
