The display is bull$shit. It only gives you a snapshot of what the mpg is at that very moment in time. You might be decelerating at that very moment and the display would show you 70mpg. I had an old 200sx that had something similar and it showed the very same thing on a lcd output.
The Top Gear people hated it because the perks (tax breaks and supposedly low fuel consumption) were absolutely not worth it to get a crap car. The car was found to have very poor road handling as well as a low top speed.

it's probably doing miles per imperial gallons.

The car isn't designed for handling or top speed, it's designed for normal commuting back and forth. I'm pretty sure Toyota made sure it can handle left and right turns in normal driving. As far as it's top speed, again, it's designed with other things in mind. A Prius just isn't the car you go around flooring it in trying to hit 140mph

i saw it, but i think they missed the point entirely. diesels are not nearly as widely available in the states, the fuel is harder to find, and they pollute like there's no tomorrow. the prius is one of the lowest emissions cars around (still can't compete with honda though). and hybrid technology is basically "free" efficiency, what's not to like? the prius is slow as hell, yes, but if you want an eco-friendly car that's still relatively practical, it's probably the best choice out there.

My parents have a Prius. It's ok I suppose.

What's the top speed on it? Edit: 109mph. Unless you're taking it to the track do you really need more than 85-90mph?
My car is governed to 108 because of the factory tires that it came with could only handle that, but they make chips that raise that limit to 124. They may make chips that raise the Prius' top speed also if someone was inclined to get the tires that could handle it.

IIRC, Chrysler makes a diesel mini van & several other models I'd kill to own.

(I'm on my 2nd diesel VW BTW, only small diesel you can get in the states )

Well, Renault will be comming to the US in '05 (I've heard) so I guess you'll soon have some choice. If they do well, they'll likely be followed by Peugeot/Citroen.

I dunno about you, but I'd love a Peugot 206CC.

I still don't think hybrids are worth the price premium. I would wait till they are much more common, and all the rabid environmentalists get one before buying one. Even then I doubt I would pay more than 1K for the option.

Does anyone know if the Prius will be able to use the Carpool lane in California in 2005?
