Tracking IP address....

If someone is visiting my site and I log their IP address is there any way for me to find out where that IP address is located at and who is using it?

There have been some strange things happening when a certain guest has logged into our site. Without them being a registered user the only thing that I can get is an IP address and I would like to find out a little more other than the ISP information that I get from a trace route.

Any info that you can give me would be helpful....I can supply IP address in PM for anyone that has any slick ideas on how to trace it down.

Thanks,

Mike

When people buy a domain they buy a Name Not an IP number.

It is extremely rare that an individual has a Domain and also owns an IP that is directly connected to the Internet backbone.

In most cases the IPs belong to big cooperation that use it for themselves, to Hosting companies that lease to others, and to ISPs? pools (like AOL Verizon RR etc.) that assigne it ti their customers.

As a result when you track an IP you would get the Name of the IP owner not the User.

Search as suggested above. If it is a Regular big cooperation you can try to contact their IT department and inform them that some one is using the company connections to abuse you.

However the chances are that you would end up with an IP that belong to a pool of an ISP.

You can complain to the ISP, if it is serious enough they would try to help you.

Do not expect that any one is going to provide with a personal info of the Individual that abuses you. ISPs can provide this information only if it is demanded by the Court, Government security agencies, etc.

Weeelll.. You can get that kind of information on the COMPANY that's listed as the registered owner of the subnet. Lookup 24.0.0.0 in the ARIN and all you find is that it's Comcast. Not much else. There are some geographical ping (neotrace, etc.) that do look this information up, but it's not always accurate. not something to depend on, that's for sure.

The exception is when the address block has been assigned to a small, local company. "Bob's Hometown ISP" is probably going to have their IP addresses used in near proximity to their registration address.

true, but most ISPs router interfaces are correct for the IP. And that can get you pretty dang close.
