Are any of these any good? There's a Rail Simulator on EA Store and steam has Trainz Simulator 12. Does the fun pretty much end once you finish playing with the driving controls or...?

I had one a while back, Trainz 2006 I think it was.

Honestly I would skip it unless:

A. You're really hardcore into the simulation aspect of it (using all the realistic controls, trying to follow timetables exactly, etc), kind like the guys who use MS Flight Sim to run their own virtual airlines. Actually I think the newest version of Trainz does have multiplayer, so you could start a virtual railroad or something...?

-or-

B. You're really into making railroad layouts, kinda like virtual model railroading. That part was pretty neat, but I personally didn't have enough interest to stick with it through the work needed to make a full & detailed layout.

Even with the realistic controls once you get the train moving it's pretty much just sit there and watch the scenery. You'll probably lose interest fast unless you fall into one of those categories above.

Hm, you might be right. Can you at least find fun ways to derail it lol? Too fast around the bridge for example?

RailWorks is probably the current best of class in railroad sims.

I was a huge rail buff when I was a kid, built HO and O layouts. I always want to love these games, so I try just about every one. But they always fall prey to the simple fact that absolutely nothing interesting is happening 99.967% of the time.

Off the top of my head:

Railworks: the leading simulator; expensive DLC of many trains and routes in Europe and the US; most players seem to prefer certain types of trains (modern, steam, etc.)

Trainz: the 'model train' simulator, lots of building courses IIRC

Railroad Tycoons, Sid Meiers Railroads: strategy games based on railroads

Microsoft Train Simulator: a pretty pure simulator of various types of trains

Some of the games have gameplay of 'missions' like running a route delivering goods or passengers on schedule.

Don't think there's a 'need for speed: Locomotives" with exciting crashes.

Not quite the same but I really enjoyed Railroad Tycoon 2 back in the day. You can pick 'em all up on Steam.

Today Railworks 2 is on sale at Steam for under $9, from $35.

Cool, thanks for the tip. Picked this up for $8.74 or whatever. Definitely a bargain if you're a railfan.

Of course, it will be boring as hell in a day or so... but $8.74 who cares?

+1 vote for Sid Meyer's: Railroads. Although it takes a little work to get it working with W7. It's also on Steam.

Railworks looks interesting but it seems like a huge money grab to me. I mean, come on, $199 for a game?

I haven't seen anything like those prices on steam. I got the main game for $8 or so, and bought some DLC for like $5.

Railroads... I really hated that game, but then I was a hardcore RRT fan and was hoping Firaxis would bring that game into the modern era.

i played the shit out of that. it was awesome. buy a bunch of stock, wait for the market to eventually skyrocket. sell. im pretty sure i even had the strategy guide. god i loved that game.

there was a semi sequal called CEO i think it was. great music. lots of different options, but mostly train building. Used the same engine.

The original Railroad Tycoon was badass too. And i still play Railroad Tycoon 2 from time to time. RRT3 was ok at best. It had some good ideas, but it just wasnt that great.

I just plain didnt like SM: Railroads.
