transfering DV to avi

Hi guys,

I'm using virtualdub to transfer some xmas video i took on my canon elura 100 (to avi, then hopefully burn to dvd).

I tried it a few times, and I get the vid fine on playback, but no audio. Tried diff options too. From reading the documentation on the vdub website, I think it's telling me I won't be able to using vdub:

"Video for Windows only captures audio through a sound device; with DV, the audio is interleaved with the video itself. I don't have any DV specs, so I can't make VirtualDub extract the audio."

Can someone confirm? I'm too much of a noob to understand what it's telling me.

Are you using AV cables or USB/Firewire? I've used VirtualDub with Firewire and the audio transferred no-problem. I did have to find the appropriate codec to get everything to work, but after that, smooth sailing.

thanks guys. I was actually browsing through the videohelp.com site right before I came here. Maybe I should keep looking.

Yeah, I used Firewire. Late4Dinner, are you saying you transferred both audio and video (my understanding is its all in one coming from the camcorder) at the same time to your hard drive? From reading, it seemed like I could also trying doing audio (using a separate program) and then adding it back to the video.

Check under Settings to see if you have the box checked for "capture audio".

thanks, "capture audio" is check. i tried a buncha options. I still don't understand the comment from the documentation above (re: i don't have DV specs). I also found the following old post from their forums:

I love VirtualDub, because it offers a level of control no commercial product does. However, I think it still needs a lot of work. For example, all of my video comes to my computer via my DV camera (it also functions as an analog to DV capture device) so VirtualDub is useless for capturing. I be SO HAPPY to dump all my buggy, confusing, video editing products if VirtualDub was compatible with DV capture.

i guess you guys have done it successfully, so i'll keep fiddling. thanks.

thanks, guys. I'll try it out. I forgot about window movie maker - seems to be working ok. thanks again for the help/suggestions.

so WMM captured ok (sound and vid), but the quality is low. and I read about it and it seems like it's a bit of work to convert it so it can work w/vdub.

i also tried windv. I get the same results as vdub - nice video, no sound. the mystery continues

but i am tenacious. i'll let you know if i figure out anything tomorrow.

I "figured" it out. in windv, I hafta choose capture "type 1" instead of "type 2." i read about it in wiki, but i still dunno what it means. so far so good though.

I just read through the Virtual Dub documentation and it appears that the software uses Video for Windows and thus requires the sound card in order to function even with a firewire card or onboard firewire. Pretty poor, however that means you have to make sure that in the control panel for the sound card you don't have the line in muted, etc.

Have you checked that?

For only $39 with lifetime updates, I would still recommend using Scenalyzer Live.

I have $500 video editing software and I still use Scenalyzer Live for firewire capture because it works better than the video capture utility that came with my expensive editor.

Most NLEs pass audio DV input through the audio processor in the sound card. Mine needs ASIO 2.

RE WMM - Export using the Save As and other options (don't have a copy in front of me.) On of the export options is DV-AVI and you will not lose quality.
