I like it. If either the manufacturer or OM replaces the broken piece you might consider purchasing a mounting kit for the monitor and finding some studs near that corner instead of putting it back on the desk. If you can find one with a swing arm that supports that size it would probably have the same look without the risk of collapsing the desk. Just a thought.

Good idea - you're in a corner too, plenty of studs to bolt the arm into....

Looks good otherwise!

Luckily the Westinghouse didn't get damaged.

I know! at least you have before pictures so you can show them what was set up on it too.

I bought a desk from Staples and a few pieces got damaged during a move. I could have repaired the damage parts because it was in a hidden spot and would have required some hardware but nothing crazy. This was a couple years after the desk was discontinued.

Anyway, I called the manuf. and they were able to locate and send me replacement pieces at no charge and let me keep the old / broken pieces too.

It looks like your desk was assembled properly and you have pictures for evidence of that. I'd guess that you'll have a good shot at getting the furniture manuf. to help you out. If you try and go overboard and ask them for other damages or to send someone out to fix it, maybe not, but if you just ask for the replacement pieces from them I'd bet they'll come through. [That's not to say you aren't entitled to more, just that would be more of a challenge].

Nice job and good luck.

Thanks guys. I just called OM and they just gave me the number of the manufacturer - O'Sullivan. I havent had a chance to call them yet.

You bring up a good point with the swing arm. I'll see how things go with the manufacturer and go from there.

Just get a sheet of plate metal of some sort cut out to match the shape of the broken piece and bolt it beneath the replacement piece to reinforce it. Of course, then you have to worry about it ripping out of the sides instead of breaking.

Alright so I called the company and it looks as if they do all the ordering for replacement parts online. I was able to pull up the manual and see which parts I needed. It was all free too!

I wonder if I can order all the parts and just re-build it from scratch? Looks like a job to do tonight from work.

2nd. i would definitely go wall mount.

that room looks fantastic. very similar to the office i set up at my house. only mine is a mess because ive got 8 computers strewn about it, and my room is probably a little smaller.

Thanks!

Well just a couple more pics of the ensuing mess. I was able to hang up the final 2 diplomas and do some touch ups atleast....so without that main piece there it was relatively easy

I have an O'Sullivan desk at home that I bought about 5 or 6 years ago. Maybe they had better quality then. It's about five feet long, with a hutch. The top is just one piece, about an inch thick. The parts weighed in at just over 200lbs, & it can easily hold that much. I have two 21" crts on top, & I've had to climb it on occasion. It looks & feels like that composite crap, but maybe they reinforced it with some steel.

Get a refund and buy a real desk. I thought it looked nice at first, but obviously it was too cheap for your needs. And mount that TV on the wall if you're gonna get a similar desk, so next time it breaks you don't have to worry.

Is it just me, or does it look like he just cleaned the room and put in a new desk?

The desk weighs 196 lbs so its pretty sturdy. I think the main piece was just defective or poorly made which over time just gave way. Its definately the composite wood which really sucks.

I am writing the manufacturer now to see if they can just ship me a new desk instead of requesting all the individual parts.

shoulda went to Ikea.

i got a sturdy as fook table from there for like £30, it had like inch + thick MDF on top and it had sides made of the same, and a glass top. you could of danced on that. it was simple, but strong.

current desk is solid wood. with steel cross beams beneath. i was gonna bag the old Oak wood table from our dining room, but it wouldnt fit up the stairs or through my 4ft loft entrance

Marked for later.

If I spend $900 on furniture, the last place I'm going to buy is at Office Max, and the last brand is O'Sullivan.

haha....now I know

I got in touch with the manufacturer (O'Sullivan) and they said they would send me all the replacement parts. Apparantly they are going out of business at the end of July and Sauder is taking over.

How can they even sell that thin, cheap piece of particle board as a business desk?

Unless they think that we live in 1920, and the most weight that gets put on a desk is a couple of books and a folder? Is that slide-out thing underneath it supposed to be for your pens and abacus? It's not like your monitor is THAT heavy...I had a 21" CRT before, and that was heavy.

The thing on the bottom is a kb shelf. I've owned a 21" CRT as well and it probably weighed 200lbs. That monitor is only 50 lbs and 37".

Well it was $900 for the desk, the file cabinet, the bookcase and leather chair shipped and taxed.

I got my "horizon" L-workcenter from OM for $95. Similar desk to yours, no drawers, 70" on a side. Got the file cabinet for $20 and a hutch for $6. Yay clearances
