after my initial reaction to the game, which was unfavorable, I came to love what I saw.
Even after my first play when I didn't come away too enthusiastic, one thing I thought they nailed was the movement, skiing is so wonderful in this game. I know there are some people (mostly Tribes 1 homers) who might not be too pleased because there are speed caps, but the caps are reasonable and quite high, the speeds I was able to achieve and even maintain as a medium armor were pretty awesome.
The loadout system, which I initially called dumb, has some real merits as it forces each class to be relatively unique instead of the old Tribes way where you could essentially create your own class. The problem with that freedom is that there's a distinct lack of balancing and thus we get some weapons and items hardly ever used.
Another thing that is really cool is the perks/skills system to level up your loadouts. Very minor improvements like +5% energy through a leveling tree or +10% skiing handling or +30% faster reloading of a primary weapon might seem insignificant alone but once you've completely leveled up a character (which will take quite a while) the cumulative difference from fully upgraded to stock can be pretty significant
But yeah, only two maps and only working on one load out the game was addictive enough for me that I spent the better part of the evening and well into night playing the only two maps available over and over again.
