Going by the forums, I don't even know if they've given out a round of beta keys any time recently, most people just pre-ordered. Probably their tactic to make some early bucks.

I don't think so because my co-worker got in, and he didn't mention pre-ordering it.

I won a key on Twitter, but I had already pre-ordered it to just be supportive, so I gave it to another friend.

I love it. I think that the TRIBES IP is dead to the current generation of gamers, and with an IP only known by "the old school" crowd now a days it's a good game, and format choice, for HiRez to get things moving again.

The old schoolers are pissed because it's not the same Tribes they knew. Well, unfortunately they're not the dominant gamers anymore either. This means they have to cater to both the old, and new gamer crowds and they've done a good job w/ that.

Plus the F2P/Loadout style is good for them to recoop costs, and if it's successful we could possibly see a stand alone TRIBES game in the future but with the way the IP is now if you released a TRIBES game it would sell a bit but it wouldn't be nearly as successful as it can be in this format, and the TRIBES series needs success... more than anything it needs to become known again.

agree completely with your assessment

I am a die hard tribes fan and my immediate reaction to this game wasn't very favorable because the disc launcher / spinfusor just doesn't feel right. However once I found a class and weapons I liked it is turning out to be an absolutely brilliant game. I think the one thing they've truly nailed thus far is the skiing and jetpack elements, just moving around in the environments is a lot of fun.

That's how I feel about Unreal Tournament series. Unfortunately the company that owns that IP has sold out to consoles and seems to have no idea what's required to make a good PC game now.

I played Tribes a little bit but never really got into it. It's good to see that it's making a comeback. If Ascend is F2P, I might get in on it if my computer can handle the specs.

Quite a lot of changes due this week, the main one being in bold:

HiRezStew said:
While the dates may move around some based on our internal testing, the next patch to Tribes Ascend is planned toward the end of this coming week (Thursday or Friday).

We are trying to squeeze in as much as we can to this next patch.

While more is currently planned, here are some of the items that have already been coded and are in the testing phase.

  • Increase speed at which experience points are gained (This was actually hot-fixed into the game through a server restart on Nov 6).
  • Remove speed cap. Implement various falling, skiing, and jetpack physics changes.
  • Projectiles inherit more velocity from the shooting player.
  • Adjusted flag throwing physics to improve throwing in specific directions.
  • New tooltips for Skills and redesigned layout for the Skills popup window.
  • Added two-step process for selecting both class perks at the same time.
  • Different colored chat for same team vs enemy team.
  • Fix for zoom breaking if zoom was enabled while a player died (this only happened when the
    Toggle Zoom feature was enabled).
  • Fix a number of issues with Settings menu and saving settings.
  • Help text ignores are now properly saved.
  • Fixed post process effects persisting to the main menu when disconnected from a match
  • Fixed hit indicator being on the opposite side for the back side hits.
  • Fixed mipping issues on many hand models as well as the spinfusor and sniper rifle
  • Separated input release time and animation time from inventory stations.
  • Fixed bug with call-in cooldown not behaving properly.
  • Added the synching of PID-loop state between client/server for Shrike. This should lower server correction and possibly eliminate the “death blossom.”
  • Allow re-selections of Perks that player has already assigned to a character.
  • Fixed bugs with wrong popup windows, lost button events and wrong buttons visible in different states.
  • Store redirects to purchase gold from store when not enough gold on player to purchase classes.
  • Fixed an issue where context help messages would not disappear if the player died near an object showing help text.
  • Improved projectile behavior for Raider’s NJ4SMG, Infiltrator’s Nova Colt, and Doombringer’s Chaingun.
  • Fixed an issue where the health regen effect would cancel the jammer pack effect.
  • When a player enters an inventory station, they begin health regen immediately.
  • Support for “Borderless Window” option. Removes border from window (best use is to run at monitor’s full-screen resolution -- allows for faster Alt-Tabbing in aand out of the game).
  • Brand New Rabbit Map
  • Several server-side fixes for stability, etc.

Really looking forward to testing this out, although I have to say I'm already having a blast, speed cap or no. Probably put in 15-20 hours this weekend in total.

Me too, Kar.

They definitely stepped in the right directly right out of the gate with the info they're getting from the Beta players which has me even more excited. A lot of companies would do little micro fixes, but they took that big ass list of things people said and already Patch 1 to the Closed Beta client is showing huge promise.

It'll be hard to play, though, because Skyrim will come out Friday as well! Bastards.

Whipper. Yes it's F2P. Based on the beta you'll get 2 loadouts on F2P release (one of which is actually pretty solid) and you can unlock everything if you just play a shit ton of games, but otherwise you can unlock things by buying tribes gold. So it's your standard F2P formula.

I dumped hundreds of hours into Tribes 1 but I never really liked the sequels though I gave them an honest try. I hope they can bring back the feel of the original (without the 56k modem lag of course!).

I'm curious as to which one of the two you believe is "solid".

There's the Ranger and the Soldier, both are medium armors. The Ranger with an assault rifle and an M79 type breach loading grenade launcher. The Soldier has the classic spinfuser disc launcher with a pistol.

Most Tribes vets would want to gravitate towards the Soldier because of the spinfusor nostalgia but the Ranger has been a far more effective loadout as the grenade launcher can serve a similar function to the spinfusor and the assault rifle is definitely better than the pistol.

Personally - despite having gold to buy additional loadouts - I've primarily been playing as Soldier. The combination of decent speed, decent armor, the spinfusor and an accurate secondary weapon has made it my default choice - especially since I've unlocked all skills (bar the perks).

Ranger is much better, however, I've unlocked a few heavies and a light and all are pretty solid

Are the maps mainly outdoors?

I thought for sure there was a couple you had to go in a base or something. Been long time since I played tribes.

Wasn't there a class that had to repair the stations so you could spawn vehicles?

it all depended on map design, there were some maps for tribes 1 and 2 where there were extensive indoor arenas

Scarabrea was probably the most notable original map from Tribes 1 for having two huge floating bases with extensive indoor areas as well as extensive outdoor environment between the two bases

I just want beta access. I wish you could buy the game with a %100 refund guarantee if you don't like it after first week of official launch.

Yeah, they have their own remake of it already in the closed beta, although the base is entirely different, far more open and far less confusing. And the environment between the mountains is nowhere near as flat, so skiing is much better.

uh, the game is going to be free to play

the closed beta is temporary, it will eventually become open AFAIK, and even if that changes people in the closed beta are being given beta keys to give away, so just suck up to someone you know has the game

I'm talking about preorder bonus you can get in beta. You can't suck up to people you don't know..

Just got into the Beta. Really liking the movement and gameplay overall. I'm tempted to buy it for $30 just to unlock some more classes it really takes tons of game to get any more. Worth paying just for the additional classes early on?

I'd say so. The free classes are both solid, but getting more classes gives you a lot more flexibility. I'm really enjoying Pathfinder currently.

I would recommend heading over to the forums to get an idea of the pros and cons of each class as the UI doesn't really give you a good idea at all, and there's currently no way of trying them out before purchasing.

And yeah, it does take a while to unlock other classes via tokens. I'm currently level 13 - having probably put in 30-40 hours at this stage - and I've only just managed to muster up enough tokens to unlock another class. That's using the booster as well.

unless you can go all pro with either of the two default classes, ie the Ranger (ranger is probably the best overall class in the game atm) or Soldier (best capping armor of the defaults, also excellent for destroying enemy assets like turrets) it really would be beneficial to unlock some more classes

The Pathfinder is the best capping class (highest speed and maneuverability outside of glitching with the Jumper) and the Technician is crucial for base maintenance and defense for repairing equipment and deploying turrets. There's also the sniper (Sentinel) and the heavy armors (particularly the Doombringer) are also very useful for base defense.

Wow I have been playing with a bunch of hardcore Tribes 1 and 2 players running competitive games and I am starting to dislike the "pubbers". 2 other guys and myself could be sitting in wait prepping for a cap when some guy will grab the flag on foot and just loaf around for 30 second until he gets killed. If I am pubbing alone I just test run routes the whole time and grab the flag when i can without communication this game really falls flat in my opinion.

I've been running a mix of Pathfinder and Brute on offense depending on who else I am playing with. Really really loving this game.

Game is pretty fun, skiing isn't too difficult, though kinda have trouble changing directions without losing speed.

Also what are some good classes other than the class description, I have no idea about any of the classes, I can't even try them out without buying them.
