Troubleshooting an Ethernet port

Hi folks,

Long time since I posted, glad to see things are still hopping.

I am trying to troubleshoot a PC that will not load the internet through a network cable. It runs very slowly, eventually stalling out the connection. It replicates the fault with multiple cables, and since it is a college dorm where the PC is, I can't get in to check the plug in.

the PC runs XP, with all the latest software ugrades, it is a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P with Gig of Ram.

So far everything seems to check out okay, but the network Ethernet connection just doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Might be a power supply issue or the port might be dirty.

Turn off the machine, plug it out of power, press power button to make sure all electricity is out and then spray the port with a can of compressed air.

Tried that already.

1): Take pc to another room and try it. If ok, network jack in other room has problem. If so, call the school IT dept to fix it.

2): Try a PCI NIC Card in the computer. The on board nic port may have gone bad.

3): You can try updating the NIC drivers or mobo chipset if on board nic port.

Not sure what he means by " It runs very slowly ".

The PC or the network connection?

PC Slow could be a virus/malware infection...
Slow Internet could also be a virus/malware infection.

Can you ping another PC on the network.

The NIC not working is no way a power supply problem. Either the NIC, Config, or Cable is wrong. Or a Virus, Malware ...

Good point about virus or malware. I had overlooked that. Also, depending on the computer, it may be as simple as a hard drive filling up and temp files not cleared out. Adding more RAM also helps.
