I have an old AVerMedia card that I haven't tried in awhile since I have U-verse now. It worked fine with Comcast for years.

When I upgrade later this year it will be to the AMD ATI Theater™ HD 750 PCIE card. Because I will be switching everything over to a WMC set up. I already have a Blu-ray drive with ArcSoft TotalMedia Theater 5 for play back.

why that card over the hauppage and hdhomerun cards? and does that card work with U-Verse?

I have thought about adding a $5/month HD converter box and hooking up to my monitor by HDMI. I just don't want to screw with stupid tuner software.

If you have Windows 7 or vista just install the tuner and then turn on windows media center. Thats all I do to watch TV through my HTPC now.

If you want real support (as in watching all channels you have), get a Ceton InfiniTV. It costs way too much. It will be a pain to get. It will be a pain to get Comcast to activate the CableCARD properly. However, once you get it all hooked up, it is worth it.

I know a few people who have those brand of cards and they've had good luck with them. They're moderately priced, support all the formats, & comes with a remote. In the end I'll go with the card that best supports my needs.

With U-verse I would have to use the cable box & plug that into the tuner/theater card. If WMC doesn't have the channel listing for U-verse it wouldn't work.

Don't feel bad, there are a lot of options here that can get very confusing for people new to this. If you want to just plug a cable box in then a tuner card is all you'll need. If you don't want to use a cable box you'll need a cable card as Ferzerp mentioned. Right now those only work for cable tv, eventually DirectTV is supposed to have something out but they've already missed one date. So don't hold your breath waiting on them.

Been using the Hauppauge 950Q for months, use it practically everyday and it's been really great (Win7 + WMC). Before this one I tried the AverMedia MTVHVMXSK which was crap and the Theater HD 750 which actually worked better. So anything Hauppauge gets a  from me.

Another vote for the 2250. Works flawlessly with ATSC, NTSC, and ClearQAM.

Also, another poster claimed that the SiliconDust HDHomeRun HDHR3-US does analog (NTSC). It does not. It only does ClearQAM and ATSC.

That was me. Sorry for the mis-information. I completely forgot about that regarding the HDHR3-US.
