Two Ethernet Ports on Mobo

My ASUS A8N-SLI has two ethernet ports on the back and I have an ethernet cable plugged into one of the ports however Windows XP pro keeps telling me a cable in unplugged. I am able to accessthe internet with someon programs however some programs can not connect to the internet unless i ahve both cables plugged in. Shoudl i disable one or jsut leave two cables.

Indeed one of the cables is unplugged. The OS needs to know exactly which NIC is operational, so disable the one you are not using.

Alternatively, you could try going into your network connections control panel, advanced menu (up the top along with file, edit, etc), and down into advanced settings. Bump the connection you want to use primarily up to the top of the list.

You may also wish to take the check box out of "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity." on the connection you don't use. It can be annoying having that nasty X down in the bottom corner. You can get to this by just going into the properties of said connection.
