U2 haters, stay out. I've listened to "Pop" more than I have any other U2 album, and its definitely my favorite, even though U2 likes to say it was unfinished, I think that makes it that much more awesome. As for the "New Mixes" on the Best of 1990-2000, honestly, I thought the ORIGINAL Discothèque and Gone were better, although Staring at the Sun definitely sounded better after remixing. What do you guys think?

U2 and Mike Hedges redid Gone, Discothèque, Staring at the Sun, and Numb for the Best of 1990-2000 album. Some people call them (New Mix), some people call them (Mike Hedges Mix), but I still think Pop was better in its ORIGINAL form, that's what made it so awesome.

u2 is the most original universally good band ever.

Thank you for acknowledging the obvious

I will only say that their old stuff NEVER gets old.

"War" is my personal favorite.

I'm slow and still haven't bought the CD, but I wore out the tape years ago. Greatest U2 album for sure.

Pop is pretty good, not my favorite, but a lot of great songs. Even the weak songs(If You Wear that Velvet Dress) have a decent musical uniqueness that makes them listenable. Both "Please" and "Wake up Dead Man" are probably my favorites, but it's a close call with many of the others.

I often wonder the same thing about the critic reaction to Pop as the OP. I think it is because the Popmart concept was a little cheesy and it was hard to divorce the popmart from the POP album. EVERY single album of theirs is valid for its own reasons and EVERY album has at least three jems.
I have been a U2 fan since I was 12 when I got my hands on WAR! THat is the perfect album for a 12 year old boy. Well 20 years later or watever, I am still a huge fan. POP is a real jem. Three songs make my ultimate playlist from that album - GONE - DO YOU FEEL LOVED - VELVET DRESS. Those are by far my 3 favorites. Other songs on the playlist are, New York, When I Look At The World.

You are so right about the 12 year old boy part. I didn't hear it until I was 19ish, but War is so full of passion and energy that it's perfect. It has all what Punk or Heavy Metal(probably most cRap as well) has while being a Rock album.

I'd have to say Gone, Do You Feel Loved, and Discotheque. There's something about Discotheque that makes it catchy as hell.

I liked most of the songs on Pop, but I thought the recording was terrible. I found myself listening to recordings of live shows more than the album. I thought Bono's voice sounded really whiney, especially on Please.

I loved how the crappy recording made Discotheque sound, it made it better. The New Mix was clear, less distortion on the guitar, Bono sounding more normal, but then it seemed like it wasn't Discotheque anymore.

A lot of times when a band with a cataloge as deep as hUGe2 re-releases songs, they will "mess with them" so they become "new" works and thus can be re-paid on material they may not control anymore.

It's all about the Benjamins...

I think it is the context of the album. Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum and Actung Baby were all pretty hard hitting rock albums, even with Actung going a little techno so to speak.
Pop though went all techno and for the most part left the good hard rocking and roll song behind.
The first half plays more like a dance album than a U2 rock album. While the second half is similar to the later halfs of other albums.
Like someoene said, Wake Up Dead Man is a great song with tons of meaning Plus it makes a great live song. That and Staring as the Sun seem to be only songs from that album still being played live.

I've got every U2 album (but October, sorry), and Pop is definately one of the best. Discotheque, Staring at the Sun, If God will send his Angels, Playboy Mansion and who can forget Mofo are awesome. There are huge discussions on this topic at @U2 forums. I'll just guess that people don't like change, and bla bla bla, or they're selling out or some other crap complaint killed it. Also, how could anyone say that Popmart was not cool? Adam with his 'biohazard-ish' outfit is the sh!t.

I thought Discotheque on the album was fine, it was just Please, Staring at the Sun and a few other songs that got on my nerves. Pop reminded me of The Unforgettable Fire. I thought most of the songs were great, but they just didn't really come through the way they should have on the recording.

I like Pop, and it really is a great album. The only reasons why people really hate it is because it was an experimental album, and somehow the record execs let the U2 name on it, instead of Passengers. The other reason is Popmart, and how it was just WAY overblown. It was fun and all, but it was like a three hour Super Bowl halftime show.

On a side note, my favorite U2 albums are the MFSL versions of War and The Joshua Tree. I also have an obsession with live shows.

Ditto. Can't remember how many times I typed in the terms "u2" and "live" into napster/kazaa.
