Hey Gary,

Still looking forward to your review with great anticipation, although I'm starting to feel like it's your canadian girlfriend or something...:-D

Yeah, Gigabyte sent me a email saying June 4th. Thats when Intel's NDA is lifted.

This is completely hopeless!

1. The mATX Roundup thread in this forum section (that Gary originally started) was abandoned without prior warning, and this thread started for no apparent reason... "mATX Roundup" title was plenty descriptive with enough reader momentum behind it to be the ideal place to post preliminary results there. Though, apparently not...

2. Not one single update posted here since the initial posting on 5/10.

3. Most importantly, STILL NO REVIEW of the mATX roundup. All while G965 and its IGP counterparts become ancient history and G33 begins knocking on the door almost a year later!

What's the holdup now, Gary?!

You apparently acknowledged my feedback from over 2 months back to split the review if the need be, into smaller, more manageable pieces. Yet, time after time, there appears to be no follow-up action based on that. How much longer MUST WE WAIT for the giant mATX roundup that's already been delayed for months by pretty much all online reviews standards?

I would have much more appreciated getting a frank and honest "No, I feel a mega roundup is better because..." type response right off the bat, so as to set proper expectations from the get-go. Yet, while you and Jared had plenty of other verbose responses in defense to other postings, you opted to respond with brief response to this one and the topic of review timing / organization in specific.

Not to overtake this thread but I truly hope this is not a sign of how future reviews will be timed and organized in the mATX (~ IGP MBs) segment monitored by a seemingly sizable audience here at AT alone!

With much confusion and frustration, I'll leave it at that...

There are 'almost daily' P35 updates for you to read while you wait though

I do worry for the mATX review when
Overall, we still have a lot P35 motherboard testing left to complete and then we'll be reporting the results to you.

Sadly, I (and I'm guessing hundreds/thousands of others) couldn't agree more.

Kind of reeks of the tactics of nightly news shows..."..87 of your neighbors killed in bizarre accident-details 'next up', after this word from our sponsors" (only to actually be an hour later into the broadcast).

Having been an avid anandtech-ite from very nearly Day 1 I can only hope this isn't a sign of things to come....certainly wouldn't have been acceptable practice in the "old days".

Anyone (well, almost anyone) is perfectly willing to understand and accept that "things change/shtz happens and everyone faces rough spots in their personal lives from time to time. Those things are "reasons", not "excuses" - taken on face value out of respect at first. Requiring some explanation and communication if the situation continues. Then ultimately making the transition to "excuse" and resultant lack of respect/trust in the speaker.

You are absolutely correct in saying that you (and I'd suggest - "most people") "would have appreciated getting a frank and honest....."

Before the shills jump out of the woodwork waving the A-tech flags and spouting verbal diarrhea, allow me to say this is in no way meant as an attack on Gary/Jared/AT or anybody else. Intended solely as constructive criticism/commentary in agreement with your (and many others) frustrations - and to hopefully provide a nudge to get AT "back on track" when it comes to their responsibilities to their "customers".

We all know all the arguments ("you're not paying anything/these guys have a life of their own/etc") - no need to rehash those.
Back in the early days when it truly was a "labor of love" and a staff of 1 it was totally understandable that a "big term paper due tomorrow morning" would delay posting a review.
Those days, for better or for worse, are gone.
Today AT is, in fact, a "real" business with income, expenses, staff, and all the perils and pleasures that go along with being so.
Advertising revenue depends on all of our "eyeballs" and like it or not, getting those eyeballs to return requires not only content but also a sturdy bridge of trust.
That "bridge" is fragile and I for one would hate to see it fall into disrepair when preventing that from happening is as simple as keeping the lines of communication open and alive.
"Communication" is, after all, the business they are in.

Last fall they promised a big round up and it was extremely late. Now this round up is more than 5 weeks after promised. I like and respect AT but I've learned I can no longer count on their round up reviews to get out in a timely fashion. They need to seriously rethink these big roundup reviews. It simply isn't working for them nor their readers. Not trying to dis on anyone but just saying a change in how things are done is needed.

It has certainly been a learning experience for myself, reading how some reviews(especially the big roundups) can get quite fraught with delays due to NDA's, driver/BIOS/HW revisions, and flat out non-communication with companies concerning their product. For one company's product alone could be quite a headache, but if you're dealing with 8 or more companies at the same time and any one of their delays with NDA pushbacks or the like... Ugh.

Gives me a new meaning for the word 'epic'.

I think it's one thing if the product is actually pre-release, then working with the company is OK.

If it's a product available in retail though, I say use the latest BIOS and drivers publically available, and test.

If there are bugs, report the bugs.

These companies should be releasing products to the public that work, not that which require AnandTech to do their testing for them, which in turn delays articles.

If companies don't want to have bad press from a company like AnandTech, then they need to start putting out product that works and works correctly, not buggy.

JMHO...

Maybe we should assume Gary has moved on to P/X35 and just start to post links to decent reviews elsewhere then?

You'll find a few at VR-Zone for example or Windwithme does a decent job of timely reviews.

I was hoping to use Gary's review info to build an HTPC to DL shows whilst I was on vacation but the positive spin is that the full review might be ready for my return in early July

WildCard - Jetway, Foxconn, Gigabyte 690 boards arrived today, understand from early reports that the ECS board is looking strong as well)
Thoughts - All of the boards performed very well, all were solid and consistent, latest Vista drivers helped tremendously, still having a few rough spots with 1080P playback, overall probably one of the better chipsets to buy in the uATX market, especially considering the AM2 pricing and performance for the dollar. (This comes from a long time Intel user who even drank the i850 / RAMBUS Kool-Aid).

Gary,

Do you have any comments on the Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H 690G uATX board? I have been waiting for this board ever since it was first announced. Like many others who are eagerly awaiting your review, I am in the process of deciding on a 690G uATX board. At the moment, I am leaning towards the Asus M2A-VM HDMI. I know it has it's limitations, but at least it's widely available here in Australia. However, a part of me thinks that I should wait to see how the Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H fairs. If it is comes out on top, I will be happy to wait a couple of weeks to purchase it (assuming it will be available in early June).

One thing I don't like about the Asus board is that it doesn't have support for Speedfan, which means i can't control the speed of the case fan. Elsewhere, I have read that the chipset does get a bit hot. I am hoping the Gigabyte board won't have these problems. Of course, if there are any more delays on the release of the Gigabyte board or "The Most Anticipated Motherboard Review of 2007", I might as well bite the bullet and get the Asus board.

Given the current manufacturer availability in Aus, your stuck with Asus, Gigabyte and maybe MSI for 690G. You won't get any of the others here
The Gigabyte.au site is only lising the ATX form factor GA-MA69GM-S3H(rev1) at the moment and it may also be pricier than the Asus.

The HDMI Asus is only AU$115 in some stores here so that's a pretty good indicator that the Giga will be around AU$15 more if/when it arrives.

I'm f@$*%#^ starting to get sick of looking thru the Motherboards section several times a week for this elusive review; I've just about given up!

I'm sure he hasn't.

We know he'll come back to our playground sometime but maybe we'll have new friends by then too...

Gave up on waiting for the review. Ended up buying the Gigabyte GA-MA69VM-S2 mobo. Stable overall so far. No memory voltage options in the BIOS, but timing can be changed. My biggest disappointment so far is that I can't get any 64 bit Linux distros to install, but the 32 bit versions work perfectly. Will try vista once I decide on a dx 10 video card. Also for those interested no issue running 4GB of ram with all 4 slots filled at 800mz.

Well, I couldn't hold out any longer and went with the Asus M2A-VM HDMI. Let's hope I don't regret my decision.

I don't know what's holding Gary up, but I sure hope it's not because the boards are not really ready for mainstream use. Manufacturers shouldn't really be releasing them to the public if they haven't been fully tested. Gary shouldn't be their guinea pig.

I'd be interested in knowing what RAM and HSF were used in the review, especially since several matx cases won't let you use the Tuniq tower 120.

Stop waiting for the roundup! It's right here in the forum! Read the first post again! Gary wrote a quick and dirty review to get us out of his hair and went to work on better and brighter things (Computex, anyone?). Nothing more to see here. Move along... :frown:
