Well, Unity just completely flipped its shit.

I was bouncing between applications on several workspaces, and Unity "glitched" (for lack of a better term). I stopped being able to click on certain application windows, like they weren't even there. Oddly enough, other applications responded fine, and any new applications worked properly as well. But applications that I'd previously opened were stuck there, like Han Solo in carbonite. I tried logging out and logging back in, but I just got a blank screen with nothing on it. I had to reboot my VM to get back into Unity.

On a somewhat related note, I'm beginning to understand some of the Unity hate. Not only is it one of the slower graphical interfaces I've used, the launcher makes it difficult to manage windows I have open. In other DE's, I can configure the taskbar so that it only displays entries for the windows on that particular screen/workspace, but I haven't been able to find any such functionality within Unity.

Another annoyance: No launch feedback

In Windows, if you start a program, the mouse cursor will change into an hourglass to let you know that you've launched an app. KDE has its hyperactive bouncy mini-launcher icon combined with an animated mouse cursor.

Unity? Nothing. I clicked on the Ubuntu Software Center icon, and thought that maybe I'd missed the icon, only to have it launch several seconds later.

Everyone on the Unity development team must have SSDs or something :\

Edit: Disregard the above. The launcher icon will throb while the app is loading.

Yet another gripe: LibreOffice and missing font behavior

I had to modify and convert to PDF a document that was written using Tahoma. As I was making my changes, I noticed that the document seemed a bit... "off." I opened up a PDF an older but similarly-styled document, and sure enough, the font was different.

Apparently, if you open a document in LibreOffice that's written in a font that's not present, it will silently choose another font as a placeholder, with no warning message or any notice whatsoever. LibreOffice even showed Tahoma as the active font, although when I checked the font list to choose it manually, it wasn't there.

I didn't think anything of it at first because I figured that Tahoma was part of the MS Core Fonts package, but I guess it isn't.

I realize that a lot of the fonts commonly used in Microsoft Office documents aren't available on other platforms due to licensing restrictions, but a little bit of warning before ALTERING THE APPEARANCE OF MY DOCUMENT would have been nice D:

In other news, the new Ubuntu Software Center looks pretty slick. Some of the magazine subscriptions look relevant to my interests...

I swicthed to gnome3. I just want the application menu were it should be. I don't want to guess what application I have installed.

Rhythmbox won't play an M3U playlist directly. You have to import it into its Library first, and then you can play it.

I'll point it at my 60GB music collection and see what happens

Gave up and tried Kubuntu, got annoyed with the UI micromanagement and went back to Mint 12. It's just a much cleaner interface and easier to work with for my purposes. Probably won't use Ubuntu again until I have a machine with power that's closer to my main rig. At least I got more familiar with the partition manager.

I like kubuntu just installed 12.04 the other day but it keeps screwing access points for my storage hdd. so if i want to go into a program like gimp and pull something from my storage drive i have to go into root and open the hdd then go to gimp or it wont see the drive.I had the same issue with 11.10 im wondering if its because the storage drive is ntfs.

I get the same behavior from my laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 (on bare metal). If I've got any sort of audio player running and start doing anything CPU- or (in particular) IO-intensive, the audio will start stuttering so much that I'll simply turn it off. And if I'm doing something memory-intensive and the system starts paging heavily, I might as well just reboot at that point, because the performance will never recover.

Granted, this is an older laptop (although I wouldn't consider it especially underpowered), but I didn't have such issues with Windows 7.
I meant to come back to this sooner.

When you've finished doing whatever task that was using swap and you enough RAM to move the stuff out of swap and into RAM, you can just disable swap and re-enable it.

disable
Code:
sudo swapoff -a
enable
Code:
sudo swapon -a
If you open a system monitor you'll see swap usage decreasing and your RAM usage increasing. No reboot necessary.

Last night I ran update manager clicked install and went to bed. This morning I no longer have any min/max/close buttons on any application even the system tools. Can't relocate (drag and drop) anything on the desktop either. Not able to access any other workspace... I can move things to another workspace but then can't get to it. Was useing it last night for a VirtualBox so I know it was working.

I think I will have to find another Linux. I just installed Ubuntu 1204 2 days ago and did not like it much when it worked.

Not being able to min. Firefox is very aggravating.

I ultimately resolved my problem by replacing my laptop's hard drive with a Crucial M4 128GB (in a 5-year-old laptop that doesn't even support SATA II, lulz), but good to know anyway

Having used the Ubuntu Software Center for a bit, my one gripe is that you can't launch applications directly from the Software Center application, like you can with the Android market (or whatever Google is calling it this month).

The USC will add a launcher icon to the launcher bar for the app, but it's not the same.

I sorta gave up on desktop linux a couple of years ago. While its cool that you can do so much customization, I prefer X11 forwarding from a headless box to a more stable OS.

12.04 marks the first time an in-place upgrade has been good to me (server edition).

The thing I've always liked about Linux et al. is you don't have to be a billionaire, like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, or Mark Shuttlesworth to "own" an operating system.

As long as I can keep hacking Ubuntu -- making it look n' feel the way I want it to -- I'll be happy.

With all the DEs available in the official Ubu repos, the possibilities are open-ended and limitless.

Hell, you can even build and maintain your own distro -- have your own PPA, yada, yada, yada.

I'd rather eat my own shit, than run Windows and/or Mac software... LoL!

Yup. You aren't at the mercy of any company to do your computing. You can change anything you like, and your goals aren't being subverted through code.
