Ubuntu 7.04 N00B Question

So, I've got Ubuntu 7.04 installed & running using the default setup. Directions I'm following (ok, for version 6.10) instructs me to fire up Device Manager by selecting

System -> Administration -> Device Manager

But it's not there. That is, System -> Adminstration does not list Device Manager. I also can't find it as an optional install but am not sure I'm looking in the right place.

Ideas?

What are you actually trying to accomplish and what directions are you following?

Well, I'm still being stubborn about installing my Broadcom chipset pcmcia card. I've got the Windows .inf and .sys files, but I need to determine the card's PCI ID in case they don't work. I should be able to find that in the net.physical_device key's value, which I should be able to find from Device Manager. My problem is that Device Manager is nowhere to be found, which I find odd.

So, I'm just trying all of my options before I post for more general help.

Well I don't know what it might be called now, but you should be able to find what you need with the lspci command.

Hmm. Good point. I've run that & didn't think I found what I was looking for, but I will try again with that in mind.

Well the PCI ID is the first set of numbers in the lspci output, if that's not right then you need something else. There's also the lshal command which should give you a text version of what you need, AFAIK HAL is the root of whatever the Gnome device manager is called.

In Fiesty, its located in System->Preferences->Hardware Information

You can also use the lshal command and grep for net.physical_device
