then run apt-get install mplayer-386 and it says

sudo apt-get install mplayer-386

For installing any software using apt, aptitude, or synaptic, you will have to provide your password for sudo. When running apt or aptitude, you will be to prefix your command with sudo so that it knows to use elevated privileges for installing.

add sudo the beginning. to use apt-get you need to be temporarily logged in as root. by adding "sudo" in front it does that. afer you type that you will need to insert your password. do that and all will be well

If you want to avoid putting in your password everytime you run sudo you can edit /etc/sudoers and put the following line at the bottom

jpbelauskas ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL

where jpbelauskas is your username....

I would advise against doing this though... if somebody can get a shell with your login they can just do sudo su and automatically have root to your box... which is BAD

There are some restrictions on some of the things mplayer does legal-wise.

Much of the software codecs that it supports, such as wmv, dvds, or quicktime files, have licensing and patent issues that make what mplayer does gray-market. Not quite illegal, not quite legal.

So some distros like Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora, don't officially support it to avoid accidently passing on legal entanglements to it's end users.. such as if you used it in a business or school enviroment.

Check out Ubuntu's website and forums. google around a bit and you'll find information on how to enable 3rd party repositories and such that will allow you to install mplayer and other things like that.

Also mplayer kinda sucks unless you want to do advanced stuff. Check out VLC or Xine or Totem. They'll do everything once you get the codecs aviable for it. (legal stuff again.).

Realplayer has realplay aviable as a application for Linux. They open sourced everything except for the codecs. The open source version is called Helix player and you may already have it installed on your system. Check out google.

Did you run 'sudo apt-get update' before trying to install it? Because looking at packages.ubuntu.com shows that mplayer is indeed in multiverse.

ok i'm still having problems with this realplayer. grrr. i ran sudo apt-get update
i figured out how to get the realplayer.bin unpackaged,

joe@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ sudo dpkg -i w32codecs.

is reads package, unpacks, and then finishes up, but thenafter it says "setting up codecs"
nothing happens.

i try running a wmv i have saved on my desktop, type mplayer movie.wmv and i get nothing, it just opens up mplayer then finds no movie, then cuts out. i try going to a website and watching a video and the mplayer hangs at 27% buffering.

am i missing something?

It shouldn't say anything after setting up codecs, all it probably does is extract them to /usr/lib/win32.

What codec is movie.wmv using? Try one that you know should work, like divx or something.

I have tons of divx and xvid media laying around, I don't really know where to tell you to get some.

You don't know whether the WMV file was created with WMP 7, 8 or 9?

Actually I just played a wmv I have and mplayer said:

Selected video codec: [wmv9dmo] vfmmo (Windows Media Video 9 DMO)

So WMV9 can work, but I think I may have copied that codec from a Windows install manually, at this point I don't remember.

Why don't you paste in here the output of mplayer when you try to play the movie?

wmp9 seems to be the codec. I use xine for al lmy video needs, and mplayer for when I watch stuff embedded in web browsers.

try looking here to see if this helps:

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=36050

otherwise try this:

mplayer -nocache movie.wmv

ok i did all that and got a little further ahead now. instead of being stuck, i get a green screen in xine.

Did you hit ctrl+c or did those signal 2 errors pop up on their own?

Well that's not right, nothing should be sending it a SIGINT on it's own.

But, try running mplayer with the -nosound option. My first guess is that your sound card doesn't do hardware mixing and that mplayer is blocking on the sound card since something else has it open.

as in mplayer -nosound movie.wmv?

i should have mentioned i do get audio, i can hear voices, but my screen is green. if you look back at my pasting, there is a ine about editing /echo something or other
how would i go about doing that?

Nah, changing the /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq value will let mplayer have a higher resolution timer, but it shouldn't fix your current problem. At the very worst, the timer thing might cause A/V to get out of sync but you're not quite there yet =)

Try running 'mplayer -vo x11 movie.wmv', it's possible there's a problem with the XV overlay, but usually that results in a blue screen, not green.

If that does the same thing run, 'mplayer -v movie.wmv' and post the output.
