your welcome, as far as the wma plugin have gotten a little further. I had to install g++ first so the configure part is correct now it appears, but its still giving me errors on the make command....also appears to be an option to use an rpm and an alien command as an alternative route to go, maybe will try that next

kinda stumbling in the dark like you and once in a while get lucky in linux..unfortunately so many of these instructions you find on the net how to do something are just written poorly or just plain incorrect.

edit:
no further success with beep yet but by downloading libdvdcss2( for dvd playback) and w32codecs have gotten windows media to play in xine for streaming .wma and .wmv just enter "xine http:streamurl " in terminal

Hey all,
this is a question from someone who has just started with linux ubuntu and really hardly knows anything about it.

I need to install the following on my pc

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.8-plugins
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.8-lame
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.8-ffmpeg
sudo apt-get install w32codecs
sudo apt-get install libdivx4linux
sudo apt-get install lame
sudo apt-get install sox
sudo apt-get install ffmpeg
sudo apt-get install mjpegtools
sudo apt-get install vorbis-tools
gst-register-0.8

most of those when i try to install i get the message that the package isn't available, i can't find them via synaptic either.

>There are scripts that you can get at the ubuntu forums that will do all of this for you. You >just issue a sudo <insert script name here> and it updates your repositories, installs the >necessary programs and plugins to get video in your browser, play mp3's, and the other >codecs required to play media.

what script can i use to install th packages mentioned above?

Thx a lot

I don't know much about the gstreamer stuff.

Check out Ubuntu's website. They'll have documentation about adding extra repositories (to enlarge your package selection) and how to deal with restricted formats such as wmv and quicktime and such.

They have pages like:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats

Were you can find more information, but be sure to read the FAQ pages and the other pages provided as documentation. If it wasn't worth it for you to read, they wouldn't of put it up there. Just make sure that the information is valid for your specific ubuntu version. of which there are several (they release a new version every 6 to 8 months).

for the script that guy was talking about. I don't know. Check out ubuntu's forums. Undoubtably somebody asked similar question already or somebody has a link posted to the script or something like that.

It depends on what version you are on. to get some of those, you need to have restricted repositories enabled for apt, especially if you are on breezy 5.10

I'm using hoary for the time being since I can install and go through ubuntuguide.org in about an hour and have everything working perfectly.
