Right now I am running my web server on a Windows 2003 server box with WAMP5. I always wanted to convert the server over to Linux but until now you had to be good with Linux and patient to get Apache, MySQL, PHP working together. I saw the ubuntu had a LAMP package available. How easy is this package to use compared to it's WAMP counterparts?

You put the CD in, boot, begin installing, it asks you for some information, then you choose to install LAMP and it reboots you into a shell with your drivers installed. Easier than an XP clean install, and much easier than server 2003 (IMHO)

I have an Intel SR1200 server sitting at home doing nothing so I thought about sticking it on there to replace my current server. So it runs from a shell, no GUI?

You can install a GUI if you want but you'll really want to learn to work with the cli anyway.

I'll give cli a shot but I've never been good with cli to begin with. Setting LAMP up isn't my worry, it's moving files around that I hate in cli.

I actually tend to move files around more in the cli because things like tab completion in bash make it faster.

I do it via cli simply because of permission issues. You can't copy & paste to root folders without having root access to those folders.

Most distributions give you a way to run your filemanager via sudo these days.

I remember moving files around in DOS days. I don't have many good memories from it. It will be a first for Linux cli for me. I won't knock it until I try it though.

That just seems dirty to me. Also, you lose your theme settings unless you've copied those over. I'd rather just use cli.

Well it's up to you and I don't find myself moving root owned files enough to really care, but the option is still there.

It's been easy to do LAMP on linux for a while. There is a package called XAMPP that just unzipped into the /opt directory and worked out of box for that stuff forever. Not the best option (no easy way to update imho, it's all outside of your package manager), but great for a noob (I used it forever).

linux command line is way friendlier then windows, so get to know it and you'll love it. And of course you can script stuff too, so if you move certain files often to certain folders you can make bash scripts for it.

Only files I'll be moving are the actual web site files.

So just add yourself to whatever group owns them (www-data on Debian by default, not sure about Ubuntu) and don't worry about needing root.

That's the direction I want to take. Does Ubuntu Server comes with an FTP server?

I finally got my server to boot off of the cdrom. How does Ubuntu server act with ATA RAID setups?

I would say just go with Linux software RAID, which sadly requires the alternative CD since Canonical doesn't let you do that in their LiveCD installer, instead of crappy motherboard RAID.

even better: Use sftp, as it's secure, and you can use keys (which REALLY makes it nice). sftp uses the openSSH server to do the file transfers (it's a bit slower then ftp, but not a lot) so you have one less port open on your server (since you would want SSH open anyway). OpenSSH has one of the best security track records ever, whereas any FTP server...well, it doesn't have the best track record, and all your ftp login stuff is in plaintext.

The regular install does not, as far as I am aware.

BUT one of the best things about Debian/Ubuntu is that you can just do 'apt-get install vsftpd' (or whatever) and the application is automatically downloaded and installed for you.
