Just installed fiesty, seems to be a big upgrade from the last one. But on Kubuntu previously it automaticly installed my monitor at 1600x1200, but this time it only installs at 1024x768. I can manually change it but then the system crashes when restarting x. The system has a KM800 chipset with unichrome graphics. It works in windows and before in Kubuntu.

Any suggetions

Post your xorg.cong and I can help you. Normaly it's a problem of reading the EDID strings of the monitor and the report of a less frequency by the monitor table. This is happening here in Brazil with LCD screens a lot.

When I had trouble with Vizio L32 LCD TV and Linux MCE, I used this program to read eide information and to create portions of xorg configuration file. It worked beautifully

Edit: Program is distributed as source files. So you should install build essentials and build the binary executable yourself.

You need to add more resolutions

Monitor "Generic Monitor"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 1
Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 4
Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 15
Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Added the resolutions to the xorg.conf file. It still is only showing 1024x768 as the highest, reboot the computer twice, any suggestions.

Ubuntu Feisty enables composite managers by default to work with compiz and beryl and your card might not support it. Take out that line I quoted and see if xorg loads.

Look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, it'll probably say that the modes are invalid because they're out of the sync range. If you're lucky you can just comment out the 'HorizSync 28-51' and 'VertRefresh 43-60' lines and it'll work just fine.

Comment this out in the xorg.conf file?

I am thinking if the problem is there or is not there. Well, Via Uncrhome graphics adapter is a shared VGA card. If the shared memory is the mínimal for the Unicrhome (4MB), may be X cannot allocate high resolutions. You can force the resolution simple adding the modelines above showed and changing the lines in xorg like this :

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
HorizSync 31-82
VertRefresh 56-72
EndSection

This will give you the refresh rate of a F700P with the maximum 72HZ of refresh rate, it's the limit for Unichrome, if you set up 60 Hz, the HorizSync will be setup automatically.
Here it is, it says generic monitor, I have changed it to the Samsung Syncmaster 900p, that it is it then gives me the option to goto 1600x1200, but then freezes on the restart,

Try to use this config file and set up more memory ( at least the double ) to your VGA card on your BIOS. This can make you 1600 X 1200 resolution work.
