I have been playing it for a week now and it is better then the first UFO-Aftermath,research you can do in this game is huge and even use melee weapons like swords, knifes etc which can be manufactured with right research.

You have to keep an eye on your resources too which you get from areas you capture .

My copy which was collectors edition came has one DVD disc, one manual ,poster, ufo aftershock style playing card deck .

Bad points are only one res, stuck at 1024x768,no different squad formation moves, maps are not that big but you have buildings with different levels so that makes up for it.
Track system which you make so resources from base to base areas can be used & shared,I dont like that.

Stability is pretty good so far, only had 2 crashes in 12 hours of playing.

Demo,links,homepage of UFO-Aftershock etc...click here.

I spent HOURS watching my dad play UFO: Enemy Unknown. Ive never had the true patience required to play it.

Terror From The Deep was almost identical but added a little more.

After that, apart from X-Com: Interceptor is the only decent game after that. Gonna point my dad in its direction and see what he thinks.

How does it run on your system Mem? Any chance of this being a resource hog?

Elcs:

My system is old but it plays pretty well, maybe the 1GB of ram I have helps a lot.

Loading times for me are about 20 secs,no real slow downs in game, remember stuck at 1024x768 res so that helps with gaming speed, you have options you can play with etc, depending on your system.

Minimum specs in manual are listed as
1 GHz
Nvidia 5700 or ATI 9500
512MB ram
4GB HD space, WinXP/2K and DX9
DVD ROM drive.

Sounds ok but my dad may be limited with only 512mb ram. Sounds like his 128mb GF4 Ti4400 may struggle a little too. Sempron 2400+ will handle the rest though.

As long as he doesnt have to touch my machine, Im happy.

That company released UFO Aftermath two years ago. The reviews for that one weren't too good, and was quickly in the bargain bin. Is there any reason to think this one is going to be any better?

I just did a quick look at their forum. It looks like the game has Starforce in it. That's a dealbreaker for me. I'd sooner install spyware.

Reviews have been good in general for this one,I actually played the first one few years back, was not that bad, don't dig too far into reviews since its their opinion,in the end it is yours that counts. However if it is reviews you really like, then this is taken from their homepage.

UFO: Aftershock was awarded with Silver Award (88%) by Gamershall.

UFO: Aftershock was awarded with Golden Award (90%) by GameVision.

Starforce, yes I have heard a lot of bad things about this but it has been ok in my system, been playing it for over a week now with zero problems.

The game is not perfect and there will be a patch or two down the road but at the moment there are no other new X-COM type games around.

IMHO it is a decent game and worth a look .

Demo makes me wanna play.

I felt like "ugh, whats going on here?" when I loaded it up but anyone even sniffing an older X-Com game will be able to pick up the basic ideas I think.

The real-time/turn-based hybrid makes it more accessible to those desiring speedier gameplay but I feel as though it loses a bit of what made the X-Com games great. Its lost some of that sinister evil when you pass control over to the aliens, who's motives always felt suspicious.

Played fine on my AXP @ 2.0ghz, 1 Gb RAM, 128mb 9800 Pro overclocked.

I played Aftermath and liked it well enough, but it was buggy as hell and the gameplay eventually got repetitive. This one looks like it has improved on the most sorely-lacking areas of its predecessor.

Will it appeal to those of us who were not fans of the series since TFTD? TFTD was my favorite of what has come out under this name. Aftermath wasn't bad but was too limited to be fun

Try the free demo,as for Aftershock they added all the features missing from Aftermath, namely things like research and manufacturing, great you can make your own weapons ,armour etc...and research section is very huge.
The game has more depth then the first one.

I hate starforce to the very core of my being. It has been installed on my machine once with Bet On Soldier and it will never go back on again. I'm usually very lenient when it comes to cd protection and stuff of that nature, but Starforce crossed the line for me.

Minor spoilers below.

I like the fact that you can add mods to the weapons in this game, for example you can add a underhand 20mm grenade launcher to most rifles, plus things like stabilizers to the muzzle, then while in the game you can select the type of fire you want for that rifle, single shot, auto, grenade mode etc....

Most Armour can except add-ons like power shields etc...so you can customize most things to your hearts content.
You also can manufacture tracking devices etc... and the psi research area also has lots of things too.

The hardest part of game is in the beginning to be honest since you have virtually nothing and lowest level men but it pays off in the long run.

Patch when released should make the game even better.

I've been playing this game for a few days now, and I'm liking it. 1024x768 doesn't look that bad here, especially with max AA. The animations and ragdoll physics are surprisingly good.

Mermaidman... it is and it isn't turn-based. Combat runs in realtime, but it can be paused at any time and auto-pauses when important events happen, like spotting an enemy or getting shot. When paused, your characters can be given a sequence of orders to follow, which can be altered at any point in time. Combat can be run at slow-mo speed as well to keep things more manageable. It combines the fine control of turn-based play with the realism of realtime.

Turn based, i hope?

I'm too old and creaky for the real time stuff.

Real time, with 3 different speeds starting from real slow, the game pauses when the team see an alien, you can also pause game anytime via spacebar in combat or during gameplay.

I loved their 'SAS' system in the demo. Once you get used to keyboard shortcuts and the like, I can imagine it turning from a paused 'thought' mode into an all out gun blazing affair with pause/regroup/re-order options.

I just wish pay day would hurry up. I wish Id bought this instead of Civ4.
