Okay.. I have not seen any good advice yet and I'm about as romantic as a lion. (find it, screw it)

GET HER EARINGS WITH HER BIRTH STONE!!! Then, next year, if you can't find anything else.. you can add to it and get her a matching bracelet with her birth stone. Then, after that, you can get her a matching necklace with her birth stone. (I did it and my girlfriend cried every time. Then I broke up with her.)

A ring is a big NO NO!

Birth stone shows that you are thoughtful.

Also, DO NOT GET HER PLATINUM JUNK. Real jewlery is made out of gold. Certain circuits and microchips are made from platinum. Platinum is a fad and just a way to be expensive. It has no real luster and all the platinum you see at a jewlery store has been shined up like hell. Get her a platinum ring and it will be dull (like pewter) in a few months.

EDIT: BTW, pretty much EVERYTHING with her birth stone will cost between $50-$250.. The earings will be the cheapest - but they can usually be worn the most. My exgirlfriend wore the earings I got her for a year straight (until she started working out).

Also, when you buy them, tell them you'll pay ~75%. (But don't say you'll only pay "75%". Tell them you'll pay $75 if the cost is $100. They'll usually take it. They will always give you 10% off if you ask (in malls, where they charge a lot).

Also, try a place like Sams Wholesale, Service Merchandise... They have nice gold, diamonds, birth stones, etc and they are usually 30% or so less than mall jewlery stores. Remember, it's not where you got it from that matters - it's what it is that you got. You owe it to her to get the nicest and best crap for the money you have.

Also, jewlery is crap - but it lasts forever. So you'll probby get it thrown back in your face when you break up. (sell on Ebay, make $$$)

No big gifts. Not necessaary. I've been married for 17 years. When my wife and I look back on things it's where we've gone, not what we got. Take her to a really nice restaurant. You say you got $100-$200. That can get you into a nice place.

A gold ring with her birthstone. I personally don't think yellow gold is nice, but if she likes it...

On a note not related to jewelry: Victoria Secret's having their semi-annual lingerie sale (commercial was just on) starting tomorrow...always a fun place for you and her. Despite it bringing up memories of my recent ex, I thought I'd suggest it. You both benefit rather immediately, and you could get 3 or 4 pieces and STILL have money left over for a nice dinner, flowers and chocolate.

Granted, I dunno what you mean by nice dinner, but yeah, it's all relative.

And if you go with my idea, and your g/f's attractive, I should get rewarded with pictures. we all should. jp, jp

Seriously. I've had high maintenance girlfriends and they go nuts when they see that box. You could probably take a dump in a Tiffany's box and give it to her and she'd still be ecstatic.

Wouldn't that be the greatest way to end a bitter, decaying relationship?

"Honey, I know we're going through a rough time, so I hope that this might make things better."
"I love yo- what the fvck?"
"I lied. That's for sleeping with my best friend, bitch! We're over."

When I was in the same situation, I asked several people and they all told be the same thing:
1) Tradition says the first diamond you give should be an engagement ring. I'm assuming you aren't ready for that, so avoid diamonds at all costs. Plus any diamond in a $100-$200 price range will be a low quality chip. $400 is a minimum for anything diamond - and usually quality ones are much more.
2) Tradition says that the girl should be given a promise ring after about 1 year. A promise ring is basically something that says you are 100% faithful to the person but aren't ready to consider marriage. Promise rings almost always are pearls.
3) A gold ring with pearl(s) cost $100-$200.
4) You need to top yourself every year. You never want your girlfried/wife thinking you went cheaper on her for one occasion. Thus I'd start a bit small (towards the $100 range) on the jewelery and spent the rest on a happy day for her (food/flowers). As the occasions go on, spend a little more on each main gift.

I ended up buying a lovely black hills gold ring (faintly colored gold with leaves and grapes very popular in the mid-west) with two white pearls.

how old are you guys?

if you're like in your 40's, buy her one of those two heart rings. I think they're gay, but worked for me during the year anniversary

And to those guys who had to state that their girl is so perfect that she doesnt care about gold and stuff like that...........i dont care

1. You're screwed.

2. Be a fool and get her this from Tiffany's mail order. They'll expedite your order for an extra $15. As previously mentioned, women go nuts over Tiffany's crap. I don't know why.

3. Make her a nice dinner with candles. Learn to cook if you have to. Don't forget the candles. Women love candles. I don't know why. Make sure you find her favorite desert.

yo could probably get some nice earrings for her if she has pierced ears.

$200 isn't alot for getting a necklace or a ring, but i bet you could get her some pretty nice earrings for that amount of money.

She sounds like a gold digger, man. I wouldn't buy anything really expensive for a girl unless I was with her for serveral years, at least. Plus there are a lot of other things that can make her happy.

girl asks for jewlery = TROUBLE!!!!!!!!!!
