Each step on the path to creating the perfect storage device has resulted in tangible benefits, but the ULLtraDIMM has taken what could be the final step, short of fusing a storage medium onto the CPU itself. The SanDisk ULLtraDIMM DDR3 SSD brings latency as low as five microseconds by sidestepping the traditional storage stack, and communicating via the DDR3 bus.

Nice that it's tested. Performance is underwhelming. The latency is only 1/3. I was expecting at least an order of magnitude. I blame their controller processing/translation that's adding latency. Until that overhead is removed it looks like a waste of time. It's probably best for AMD and Intel to build a separate direct path within the CPU specifically for NAND storage.

However we already do have PCIe controllers in CPUs and as PCIe NVMe SSDs have proved, their performance future is very BRIGHT.
