Ultra100 & Maxtor 15GB problem

Whenever I try to use my Maxtor 15GB 7200RPM drive with the promise controller on my ASUS A7V133, the damn system only seems it as a 2GB drive. The funny thing is, during the drive detection on the Ultra100 BIOS screen, all drives and their sizes are detected properly. It's only when I go into an operating system, that it shows as 2GB. Even if I'm booting from a Windows 2000 or XP CD, and go to repair and type MAP, all my drives show up properly, except this one. Here is my configuration:

Promise IDE-1 :
Master: Quantum Fireball KA Plus 13.6GB
Slave: Zip 100

Promise IDE-2:
Master: Maxtor 15GB 7200RPM (51536U3)
Slave: Pioneer 16X DVD-ROM

When I take the IDE cables in this exact configuration and switch them over to the VIA IDE controller, the maxtor drive is detected and works fine. It's only on the promise controller, when I have the trouble.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Mike

where are you getting your information from... from the disk tools or from what right click -> properties tells you?

it seems like you maybe have a fat16 partition which is limited to just 2 gigs, try to use fat32 on it if u havent already

Also why are you trying to run anything other than HD`s on the promise controller...? Its designed for HD`s not other componets...? (DVD, CDRW, Zip drives....) I would switch the other componets to the VIA controller and put only HD`s on the promise and your troubles will most likely go away...

ok, first of all, I'm getting my information from a few sources.... on a working Installation of Windows ME, the drive is reported as 2GB whereas it's reported correctly on the VIA controller. The second place is when booting from a Windows 2000 CD, I go to the repair console (since it will not boot when changing controllers), then you type map to view the available disks on your computer. All devices are reported correctly, except the Maxtor.

Secondly, the drive is formatted FAT32, it was formatted using the format during the Windows 2000 Installation.

Bartman, I thought of that and removed the Pioneer DVD-ROM that was on it's chain and put it on the VIA controller... but still had the same problem. Do you think removing the Zip drive will make any difference even though it's on a different channel?

Thanks a lot for your replies
