Unable to enabling UDMA5 in Linux

Hi,

I'm running the vanilla kernel 2.4.19 on an Abit BX6-2.

I have a Proimise Ultra 133TX2 card in it and have two Maxtor D540X 80GB (ATA-133) drives connected to this controller as /dev/hde and /dev/hdf. These two drives are on the same ribbon. The controller and the drive all support the UDMA5/ATA-133 standard.

When I use the hdparm utilitiy, it reports that the drives are set to udma2. I tried to manually set the drives to UDMA5 (using the -X69 option) but it doesn't set it to UDMA5.

I have the latest bios installed for the motherboard and the Promise controller.

I was wondering where I might begin looking to solve this problem.

I'm not sure, but I think you need to apply patches from http://www.linux-ide.org/ to get UDMA-5 and LBA-48 support.

But If you don't need the LBA-48 support I wouldn't bother with it. You can probably get it to run at UDMA-4 speeds and the speed gains from ATA-100 -> ATA-133 are negligable.
