Unbreakable encryption system!

The company is called MagiQ. Their product is called Navajo (for the navajo coders in WWII). Anyways they have produced the worlds first commercially available quantum key distribtion system. I am not totaly sure how it works, but it relys on incorporating real-time key generation with quantum distribution of those keys. So I guess it uses photons ot something to generate these keys, and are thus, uncrackable! Not to mention the keys are changed very frequently, oh about 1000 times a second. Intersting huh?

May I suggest the novel Cyrptonomicon by Neil Stephenson (or is it Stevenson?)

Anywho, one of the best recent books, imo.

Anywho, about the one-time pad thing. The major 'hard part' involved in creating a crypto system is to create a way for two different people in two different locations to generate the same near-random one time pad.

Usually, this involves crazy mathmatical functions (Stephenson likes the Zeta-function in his book). However, once a code-breaker knows your function and your seed (whatever input you give it, could be the date, some function of the date, pre-arranged strings, etc.) he can decrypt your messages easily.


Anywho, with computers capable of using keys 4096 bits long, and some even longer . . ! your communications are as secure as your key is . . and if you are careful, your communications will be secret until some major quantum supercomputers are built.

It would take someone with root on Earth Simulator about 5000 hours to fully compromise each machine on my LAN - by which time the keys have cycled ten times. I honestly believe that there are classified governmental supercomputers capable of doing the same in under 500, however, so if they started right after a key cycle, they have the possibility of breaking it in time. So I asynchronously cycle keys. What is valid now may not be valid when you're done.

And I don't even have anything to hide!

Built-for-purpose encryption breakers are much faster than "just" a supercomputer bit-banging through all the iterations of possible keys or running cracking software (government-grade / commercial).

Scarfo's kid in Philly thought he had the system beat by encrypting all the info on his system. The FBI got permission to bug his keyboard, so they learned all the passwords, then swooped and collected everything, decrypted everything, and sent him to prison.

There's more to security than just re-arranging the bit pattern.
