Has anyone had any experience underclocking a cpu to run as few quiet case fans as possible to reduce noise?

I'm running reduced xp1700 votage 1.63V MIM reports, so I can run a 3000 RPM fan. Now I can hear my harddrive again, and get some sleep. Prime95 runs fine, but I only tested it for 15-16 hours. Has anyone ordered the fan speed selector from svcompucycle before? does it work well? Sometimes I feel bad not taking my xp1700 to 1650 mhz.

Underclockign to run fanless? Well....just get like the YSTech 28dBa 37cfm fan....it's not really loud, and you can run it with an AX7 without having to underclock your CPU.

I'm running an 8045 with an L1A at default speed (1600+). I have an 8045 since I ordered it just two weeks before the AX7 arrived

Going to extremes I decided to try underclocking my XP1700 and eventually I got it running at 500mhz at 1.46v. Might take the voltage lower.

The only fans are a variable speed Enermax at slowest speed on top of a Alpha 8045 and a Panaflo L1A in my power supply. I still can't hear my Baracuda IV at idle, but can hear it reading barely. Temps are way below what I know run stable so I probably bring the speed up alittle. Idealy I'm trying to make the system run the 22db range.

Idealy I'm trying to make the system run the 22db range.

There's no need to underclock to achieve this goal. I'm running with a L1A in my PSU (21dBa) and an L1A on top of my 8045. My CPU temps are around 45ºC where my case temps are like 32ºC. My HDD is a Maxtor VL40 (super quiet low-performance drive; I'd perfer a Seagate CudaIV). And I have my northbridge fan and a tiny GPU fan.....all at stock speed. Why underclock to like 500mhz?

Mine runs stably when I lower the voltage to 1.65v @ 1.4ghz.

It was my 1st attempt so I figured to start at the bottom and work my way up. Right now the power supply fan makes the most noise but I need to cut out the stamped and install a wire grill. I was planning on building a wood isolation box but I may just skip that for underclocking as this seems to work pretty well. My northbridge fan is really loud so I disconnected it when I was running at full speed, w/no problems. What power supply are you using? Mine only has vents on the front face (where the power wires come out) so I'm thinking of either replacing it or drilling out more holes.

here is the answer to your problem...no o/c....then no fans in front, big fans in the back to exhaust...creating great airflow... front to back, and enermax fans in the entire system, including the p.s.. you can't go (fanless) , but switching out the fan in your p.s. will make you wonder why they put cheap, loud ass fans in there in the first place. i have always put quiter fans in my p.s.....as they are always the most anoying part of the system. p.s. switch is very easy..just don't touch anything that looks like it is imortant. really, it's very easy, and the results are signifcant.

god.....i love 220 volts [i'm ok now, with the medication, and all]

I forgot to mention I already switched out the power supply fan with a 80mm panaflo L1A. The Panaflo's are almost silent when run outiside the case, so pretty much all the noice must be coming for the air drag around the power supply components.
I'm wondering if there are power supplies that are more aerodynamic internally that my run quieter.

22dB total or 22dB for each individual part? If you're trying for 22dB total, that's impossible, the Seagate already is at 24dB idle.

Using Panaflo L1A's (which are a piece, there are much better fans out there, but far more expensive), just one exhaust, one CPU fan, and everything else passive cooling, it'll still come out to 27dB with the Seagate (24dB without).

BUT, if you get the ultra-expensive Papst 12dB/19CFM fan, then you're in business. You could have up to eight of those suckers and still come out to only 21dB total (without the Seagate).

It does help that the Seagate is inside the case.
I opened the power supply and disconnected the fan and wired the cpu fan to 7volts. Running the case open in this config is extremely quite, but I' was watch the the temps slowly climb so have to use the power supply fan again after about 30 min
