Primal Fear

Added the first two, thanks, they look good.

Not sure Primal Fear would be considered underrated, it is regarded by most to be a brilliant movie and is highlighted by Ed Norton's breakout performance. Requires further review.

KT

You're right, I did some more research and found out that Ed Norton was nominated for an Oscar for Primal Fear...so for the purposes of this thread, it's out.

Return of the Living Dead (1985).

In the category of 'so bad it's AWESOME!'. Serious gaffes make it into the final cut, and who can forget when the zombies figure out that they can eat cops and paramedics and then get on the radio and say : "send .. more .. cops" .. "send .. more .. paramedics..."

This was one of my favourite movies when I was a kid. When they capture the half zombie and have her strapped to the table, with her spinal cord whipping around as she tries to bit them; just fantastic!

I would say Munich is definitely underrated.

I'm not so sure I would agree. I liked the movie quite a bit, but it made over $130 million worldwide and seemed to be quite highly regarded and was nominated for best picture and director; not sure I can say it is underrated.

KT

Did it really? I had no idea. I just labeled it as underrated because most people I know hadn't even heard of it much less seen it. It just didn't seem to get a lot of buzz, though I knew it was critically acclaimed.

I don't consider Black Hawk Down underrated because almost everyone I know has seen and loved that movie. I guess it's the difference of something being critically underrated or in terms of popularity.

How about Fletch? That series always cracks me up.

Yeah there appears to be debate here about Black Hawk Down. I've never seen it myself as I'm not a huge war movie guy, aside from a few that I really enjoyed (Apocalypse Now, Platoon, and Full Metal Jacket come to mind). I'll research it a little more to see whether it belongs here or not.

Fletch added; awesome movie. My favourite Chevy Chase movie after Caddyshack and the first two Vacation flicks (though to be honest that does not leave much else).

Cat People (the 80s version)

There are very few erotic horror movies around. It is not a great movie by any stretch, but it's very moody. The ambience (sp?) is what's striking in this film, aided by David Bowie's soundtrack. Malcolm McDowell plays up his usual psychotic character. As an added bonus, there is a scene of a topless young Annette O'toole of Smalleville fame.

This was a big coup for me and my buddies when we were able to score this from the local rental place. I barely remember the movie now, aside from feeling that it was not scary. May be worth a re-watch; added.

You're right. It was not very scary at all. I was only 8 yrs old when I first watched it. The scene where the zoo keeper prodding the panther with a metal prong left quite a vivid impression on me.

My Blue Heaven

 This is a solid movie...love Steve Martin's performance.

Another gem. Steve Martin's movies are 80% good, but a lot have limited releases.

Yeah, I was around 9 or 10, hence the major excitement surrounding getting our hands on it. I am definitely going to try watching it again soon, since I can barely remember it right now.

Hyperbole? Methinks so. Do you have any explanation as to why you think that?

Boondock Saints <-- cult classis status now, though it was underrated at release
The Core <-- an average but entertaining film
A Few Good Men <-- critically acclaimed popular film
The Firm <-- critically acclaimed popular film
The Hunt For Red October <-- super popular film
Days of Thunder <-- sold a lot of tickets
Ronin <-- underrated
Reign of Fire <-- underrated

Out of those, only the first one and the last two are possibly 'underrated' films. The Core is a possibility, but tbh, it's been so long that I don't remember much about it other than it wasn't too bad.

i know its been mentioned a few times already but i wanted to say that i truly believe that gattaca does not get the respect it deserves. amazing cinematography, great score, an interesting story and is getting a special edition release in march. yet it did poorly at the box office and has flown under the radar for far too long.

I completely agree. I had heard nothing about this movie when we decided to rent it one night (mainly because I dig Uma) and we were quite blown away by it; totally unexpected.

KT

Nice to see some other fans. Agree with all the above, plus, I felt it nailed the surrealism of the very real, very immediate future facing us. Good story too. Loved the closing shots perspectives. Very understated and old school.

Pretty much what I was going to say. I will add The Core as well.

PS: I ended up being out of the house for a good chunk of the weekend, so I did not get a chance to reclassify these things as I wanted to. I'll try and take care of it later this week. Just in case anyone cares, which, in actual fact, nobody probably does.

Do not lose faith. It is important work you are doing. Think of the children. Without knowing better they will miss out on some great movies.

Raising Arizona is one of the few Nicolas Cage movies I can still stomach. Great flick. I'll add it because it may be somewhat forgotten now.

See my post a while back re: The Fisher King.

Adaptation - an all-around good movie.

Awakenings - old movie, but I remember it being decent...

The Fifth Element - I watch it every time it's on TNT, I don't really know why.... lol

Quills (one of my favorites) - Geoffrey Rush is fantastic.

Being John Malkovich - I like Charlie Kaufman movies for some reason, he's just neurotic.

Better Luck Tomorrow - highly recommended. EDIT - wait, already on the list, scratch that.
