Uninstalling an A64 heatsink and fan

Hi Guys!

A couple of months ago I bought a tube of Arctic Silver 5 mainly to have it applied to my Video Card (installed a VGA Silencer). Now I want to apply AS5 to my CPU (An A64 2800+). It has the stock HSF that comes in the retail package.

This has been my first AMD build, and I must say that installing the HSF was not an easy task. I found a couple of guides (with pics) and I was amazed with the amount of push force that was required to install the HSF (and the guides confirmed that it was that way).

Now I want to uninstall the thing and I don't want to screw it up, so I need advice on the best way to do it. Are there any guides out there (with pics) that show this ?

- Should I dismount the mobo and do it outside of the case, or is it OK to uninstall the HSF and then reinstall it with the Mobo still mounted in the case.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

Ok, that was stellar advise. *shakes head*

You can leave it in the case if you like, but I would suggest taking it out of the case at least for remounting. Dismounting it inside the case is alright. But when you are pushing that much pressure on the board it is best to have it on a flat surface, so it is distributed well. Prefereably use the foam mat that came with you MoBo, if you didn't save that, then on a wooden surface is the next best thing. Also, if you used the thermal paste that was on the HSF from the retail box, you will want to run prime 95 for about 15-20 mins and get the CPU good and hot and then remove the HSF as soon as you can afterwards so that the paste is loose. Because the paste that comes on the Stock HSF is VERY tacky, and you could end up pulling the CPU out of the socket.

Good Advice pulsedrive, I'll keep in mind to get it hot with Prime before trying to uninstall it.

Now, on to the actual removal of the HSF... any advice on that. What tool should I use, how to do it exactly ??

I'll track to look for the CPU manual, but I have not guarantee that I'll be able to find it.

Thanks.

No, on tools should be required, except maybe a flat head screwdriver to help you get the latch off of the first side of the HSF. I always used a butter knife, because I happened to be in my kitchen at the time. Anything flat like that will help you leverage the first clasp off, then it should come of pretty easily. Try to wiggle it side to side a little, but depending on the MoBo, you may not be able too.

heat it up is the key here. you really dont need to take the board out of the case unless you're changing the back plate or mounting bracket.
