uninstalling XFree86 in FBSD

When I setup my FBSD 4.5stable box, I installed XFfree86 through /stand/sysinstall (which is only 3.3.6). I want to install XFree86-4 via the ports collection, but I'm assuming I need to uninstall XFree86 3.3.6 first. I have looked through the Handbook, XFree86.org, and even the man pages, but I can't find anything. There's nothing in pkg_info, so I'm stumped... I'm not asking the steps to uninstall it, as much a place where I can read how to do so However, any responses/help would be much appreciated...

I'll give it a shot!

I believe that you will need to remove XFree86 and all the dependent ports/packages.
Do a pkg_info to get a list of all packages and delete all the X dependent ones first using
pkg_delete <name>.

You may also be able to do a "make deinstall" for all the x specific ports, in the respective ports
directories.

Next try removing or better yet, renaming your /usr/X11R6 directory. There may also be the . (dot)
files in your home directory which you may need to backup.

You can then go into your /usr/ports and update the ports tree (I am assuming that you know how to cvsup your ports tree).

I believe that by default, the ports collection attempts to use XFree86 3.3.X. If you wish to run/build XFree86 4.X, ensure that the line:
#
#XFREE86_VERSION= 4
#
in your /etc/make.conf is uncommented.

Finally,
cd /usr/ports/x11/XFree86-4
make
make install
make clean
should do it.

I am assuming you are aware that 4.6 will be out tomorrow. Good Luck!!

I did a pkg_info and I wasn't sure what was and what wasn't an X dependent... I guess I could always look at the port for XFree86 3.3.6 and see what the dependencies are... Yes, I know how to upgrade my ports, I have already done so. As for the install, I prefer
#make && make all install clean
I didn't know that XFree86 4.6 was coming out tomorrow. However, I doubt that will detour me from trying to ssh into my box at work, and upgrading the the current port. I doubt FreeBSD will port XFree86 4.6 for a few weeks, and I'm too lazy to do a pkg_add -r
