I found this link a few days ago somewhere, but did not turn up anything on it when I searched both here and FW.

link

I was concerned that this was a valid offer, so I e-mailed United and got the following response:

"Yes, the Miles for Magazines promotions is a legitimate offer. You can also contact them directly at 1-800-961-8723."

How are these magazines free? You redeem miles for them. They are about 600 miles a mag. 1 UAL mile goes for about 3 cents on the open market. So these magazines cost about $18 a year. Not so hot to me. Especially since you can get many of them for free from places like free biz mags.

If you buy something online at their partners online (like I did at OfficeMax recently), you get 4 miles per $.
So a large order can get you these magazines for *free*. Pretty good deal

No. You either have bad reading comp. or didn't read his post. Each magazine requires miles. Miles require flying. How many airlines do this? All of them? Pretty much. This is not a "Hot Deal" by any respect. :-\

Not all reward programs require you to fly in order to earn miles. United has a couple of programs, including credit cards, where you can earn miles.

It still doens't make it free. I could sell those miles and get $18 instead of getting the magazine sub. How is that free again? It's like saying the magazines are free, all you have to do is redemn dollar bills. You can get those just by working.

The point is, you don't have to pay cash to get them. While you are at it, point out a website that give .03 per mile and has no minimum.

btw, you are getting into the real of thread crapping.

I used the American Air Lines miles for magazines and you better read the small print. Unless YOU cancel prior to renewal, they automatically renew and I had a $100.00 on my credit card. Fortunately, my wife caught the charge and I cancelled immediately. Free is not always free.

That is true. I completely read over the form, and it states that no CC number is required. I figure that the worst way they could possibly screw you is if they automatically renenwed by deducting miles after the end of the subscription.

um. tons of reward programs dont reward in cash, but GCs and etc. but they're not considered free. u should really change the topic to: convert ur miles for magazine. topic is very misleading imho.

If you already have the United miles, then they're free.

Why dont' I just go buy the magazines at Borders? I already have the money so it's free.

Anyway you look at it. Miles are just another form of currency. You can exchange them for tickets, magazines or whatever. That's the same theory behind money. It's a medium of exchange. Free implies that you don't have to give anything to get it. The title should be changed to something like "use miles to get magazines".
