The little bit I did going thru the harmony software seemed pretty neat and simple to use.
Yeah, the Harmony software is awesome. It's got a huge library on there, and lets you easily customize the remote to your liking. It also lets you test out changes before making them permanent in case you totally screw things up. I bought a MCE IR receiver for my HTPC, and all I had to do was type in microsoft computer (or something like that), and it pulled up all the functions. The library even has oddball things like ceiling fans. I had a VCR with no remote when I first bought it, and I just had to enter the model number, and it pulled up all the right commands.
The macros are really what sold me though. My wife used to have to call me just to play a DVD. "Pick up the receiver remote. Hit power. Hit DVD. Pick up the TV remote. Hit power. Hit input until its on component 1. Hit power on the DVD remote." I had that conversation one too many times and splurged on a Harmony remote. Now she hits Watch DVD, and the remote does everything for her.
