unix terminal emulator?

i cna't remember the name of this software I used to use, where I could give a gateway address for a computer in one of the college labs (they use redhat) on my windows PC, and get a nice window on my PC which is identical to what i'd see in the lab?

Any ideas guys?

tried putty, but that gives more of a command-line based interface, pretty much telnet.

what i want is to see on my desktop the exact screen as i'd see in the lab-- like i'd log in, see the little clock on the top right, have everything "clickable" and be able to run the applications on that pc.

Cygwin/x will work, assuming you can telnet/SSH into your *nix cluster.

cygwin/x looks pretty complicated; tried installing and got the bash shell command... program i recall having used was a simple package, literally like remote desktop- nothing complicated, you double click it, put in the server, hti connect, and you see the linux desktop login on your windows desktop-- like VNC.

Your options are 1) running a VNC server on the unix machine. Since you said that's not an option, you have to 2) run an X server on your windows box. This would be one of StarNet X-Win32, Exceed, Cygwin X, etc... you will also need to connect to the unix machine with a command line once to launch the GUI applications.

It really sounds like what you remembered was in fact VNC. What happens if you type "vncserver" or "vnc4server" on the unix machine?

Just use Putty, you should know the command line anyhow.

Yeah I don't see what you need to do remotely that needs the desktop. It'd be way too slow anyway. Just logging in via ssh to my school's server and loading up vim, the typing is very lagged. So it doesn't have much use... I only really need it for typing 'submit' when I have a program due. I code it at home (unless it's very hot out so I prefer the school for A/C) usually, FTP the code to the school's server, then SSH so that I can ensure it compiles on there machines and submit it remotely. The campus is like 1 mile away, but hey why not be lazy.

If you've got ssh access why are you still using ftp?

Well its FTP with SSH2 encryption or something like that but I don't know how to copy a file from my machine to my account on the server using Putty command-line. I seem to remember 'get' or 'put' commands, but I'm not too sure.

You mean sftp? Or you're tunnelling regular ftp over your ssh connection? To do sftp with putty I believe you have to download another exectuable (probably called sftp.exe) which you run as a seperate program. Or use WinSCP which is pretty handy if you like the gui.
